Rosemary Clooney and Ginger Bess: Preeminent Singers @ Grand Theatre (Salt Lake City, November 1)

Rosemary Clooney and Ginger Bess: Preeminent Singers
Salt Lake City – The Grand Theatre’s new “Backstage at The Grand” Concert Series continues on November 1 by presenting “Songs of Rosemary Clooney” performed by Ginger Bess.
Ms. Bess will sing selections from Rosemary Clooney’s career, which includes many jazz standards made famous by Clooney’s original interpretation. Frank Sinatra once said, “Rosemary Clooney has that great talent which exudes warmth and feeling in every song she sings. She’s a symbol of good modern American music.”
Ginger Bess is a local performer with a wealth of onstage experience, including recent productions of “Chicago” and “Jekyll and Hyde,” in which she played vocally-challenging female leads. Ms. Bess is a graduate of the Musical Theatre Program at Weber State University.
Songs of Rosemary Clooney as performed by Ginger Bess will play November 1-3 in the Grand’s new Backstage Theatre. Tickets can be obtained by calling the Grand Theatre box office at (801) 957-3322 or online at www.the-grand.org.

Leslie Howard @ St. Mark (Salt Lake City, November 14)

Manning Up @ Salt Lake Acting Company (Salt Lake City, November & December)

MANNING UP A NNPN Rolling World Premiere
By SEAN CHRISTOPHER LEWIS
Directed by TRACY CALLAHAN

“Childbirth is a journey for you too.”
 -Donnie to Raymond, Manning Up

Salt Lake Acting Company is pleased to present the National New Play Network Rolling World Premiere of MANNING UP by Sean Christopher Lewis. This warm-hearted comedy is the second production of SLAC’s 42nd Season and it will be directed by Tracy Callahan, performed in the Chapel Theatre. The National New Play Network is an organization which unites nonprofit theatres that champion the development and production of new plays. Through its program the Continued Life of New Plays Fund, NNPN supports three or more theatres which choose to mount the same new play within a twelve-month period. The result is a "Rolling World Premiere" where the playwright develops a new work with at least three different creative teams, for three different communities of patrons, and will join the repertoire of frequently produced new American plays. NNPN provides grants to each participating theatre. We share MANNING UP’s Rolling World Premiere with Riverside Theatre in Iowa and Actors' Summit in Ohio.

In MANNING UP, we meet Raymond and Donnie, long-time friends and soon-to-be-fathers. The way pregnancy is changing their wives is obvious -- but Donnie and Raymond are discovering that fatherhood is changing who they are, too. Together, in Raymond’s ‘Man-Cave’ the guys discuss their fears, harness their energies and explore their pasts and their futures as….men. The quirky friends are an odd yet endearing pair, based off of Playwright, Sean Christopher Lewis’ true life best friends; two men who discovered their wives were pregnant at the same time. Drawing on the realities unfolding in the lives of his friends, Sean felt compelled to articulate his personal fears about fatherhood through comedy.

MANNING UP gives new fathers a voice in a typically female dominated conversation. From Lamaze Class to the rediscovery of their own masculinity, MANNING UP is a humorous insight into what men can expect when they’re expecting.

Salt Lake Acting Company’s production of MANNING UP is directed by Tracy Callahan, Head of the Acting and Directing Program at Weber State University. Tracy’s directing credits at SLAC include the World Premiere of COURSE 86 B IN THE CATALOGUE, SIX YEARS, HOW I LEARNED TO DRIVE, and MERE MORTALS. Real life, soon-to-be-father Lanny Langston is happily making his debut in Salt Lake City after recently receiving his MFA in Acting from the University of Idaho. Jesse Peery returns to the SLAC stage after appearing in last season’s World Premiere of A MAN ENTERS. Jesse will next be seen in Pygmalion Theatre’s Production of A NIGHT WITH THE FAMILY, a play that was a part of SLAC’s New Play Sounding Series in 2011.

SEAN CHRISTOPHER LEWIS (Playwright) Sean Christopher Lewis is the Artistic Director of Working Group Theatre. He is a contributor to NPR'S This American Life and his plays have been awarded the National New Play Network Annual Commission, the Kennedy Center's Rosa Parks Award, the National New Play Network Smith Prize, NEA Voices of Community Award, the William Inge Fellowship, a National Performance Network Creation Fun Grant, a Barrymore Award, two Central Ohio Critic Circle Citations and a National New Play Network Emerging Playwright Residency. His plays and solo pieces include KILLADELPHIA (Available Light Theatre, Baltimore CENTERSTAGE, Drilling Company NYC, Gerald W. Lynch Theatre, InterAct Theatre, Hartbeat Ensemble, Touchstone Theatre, Riverside Theatre, Legion Arts, Empty Boat Theatre, Adirondack Theatre Festival and more); JUST KIDS (Pontine Theatre, Sandglass Theatre, Working Group Theatre); I WILL MAKE YOU ORPHANS (Galapagos Art Space, Riverside Theatre, Uno Festival of Solo Performance, Hyde Park Theatre); MILITANT LANGUAGE (Know Theatre; Halcyon Theatre); THE APERTURE (Cleveland Public Theatre) and MAYBERRY (Hancher Auditorium; Bucksbaum Performing Arts Center and Iowa Arts Center).

NATIONAL NEW PLAY NETWORK (NNPN) is the country’s alliance of non-profit professional theatres that champions the development, production, and continued life of new plays. Since it’s founding in 1998, NNPN has commissioned almost two dozen playwrights, provided nineteen MFA graduates with paid residencies, and supported more than 100 productions nationwide through its innovative Continued Life of New Plays Fund, which creates “rolling world premieres” or new plays. Hundreds of artists have gained employment through these efforts in the dozens of regions of the country where NNPN member theatres are located. NNPN receives substantial support from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the Harold and Mimi Steinberg Charitable Trust, the Shubert Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Arts.

PERCUSSIONIST RONNI KOT WENZELL IN RECITAL
OCTOBER 29, 2012

Southern Utah University, Cedar City, Utah:  The equation is: percussion x 2 = great music. Dr. Lynn Vartan is thrilled to introduce Ronni Kit Wenzell to southern Utah music audiences. “Ronni is an amazing musician,” says Dr. Vartan. “His unique artistry will delight our audiences and students. His technique is impressive. As a percussionist, I have been wanting to collaborate with him on such a diverse program for some time.”

At an early age, Ronni Kot Wenzell began taking lessons in percussion with former Royal Orchestra musician, Ole Pedersen, and lessons in piano, theory and harmony with German pianist and composer, Edwin Kammerer. After a short period of time he enrolled in the Hørsholm Percussion & Marimba Ensemble which led to numerous concerts, tours in Europe and several CD recordings. Ronni has often worked with the renowned and award-winning American dancer and choreographer Ann Crosset. He has played, composed and produced music to some of her great works of choreography including “Dance, Dance, Dance” alias “The Varde Project” which toured in 2006, “Happy Birthday H. C. Andersen” for piano and sneeze which was premiered at The Royal Theatre 2007 and “Sweet Peas and Other Recipes for World Dance” as a great cooperation between Jordan and Denmark. “Sweet Peas” toured in Denmark and Sweden and received great acclaim in the media (TV2 News, DR1 News, Danish Radio P2 etc.). Ronni also enjoys photography, graphic design and layout beside his music, and has worked for The Fünen Opera, Carl Nielsen Academy of Music, The Royal Theatre, Danish Radio, International Makeup and Artist School, Benalcorp S.L.U (Spain), Edition Svitzer (Sweden) among others. Vartan has been featured on the Los Angeles Philharmonic Green Umbrella Series, the Different Trains Series and has soloed with the Music and the Court series in Pasadena, California, and the Sierra Wind Symphony. “We are proud of Jane and Alison’s accomplishments,” said Margaret Hunt, Director of Utah Arts & Museums. “They have invested significantly in building their own capacity as museum professionals and in advancing the value of Utah museums. They’ve set a great precedent.”

“I think the classes are a great opportunity for people working in museums,” said Beckwith, “especially for people in rural areas who don’t have access to universities.” Participants choose four courses in three emphasis areas, such as exhibitions, fundraising, public relations and marketing, museum history and theory, education and interpretation, collections management, caring for collections, governance and leadership, and curatorship.

“I jumped at the chance to go back to school to get my Certificate of Museum Practice,” said Fox. “I’m very glad I did it, because it got me into the museum community, where I met and worked with lots of wonderful people.” Museum professionals are partnered with students to complete real-world projects strengthening Utah museums. For example, Fox helped organize the Weber County Daughters of the Utah Pioneers into a collections database. More than 20 scholarships have been awarded to museum professionals over the past two years, and individuals aged 62 and over were able to audit the courses for $10.

The next round of classes will run January 7 through April 29, 2013, and will be moving to an online format. Those wishing to apply for scholarships can find the guidelines at artsandmuseums.utah.gov or by contacting Wendi Hassan, whassan@utah.gov, 801.860.6396. Scholarship applications for spring semester are due December 1, 2012.

NEWS: DOWNTOWN ALLIANCE INSTALLS WEB CAMERAS ON MAIN STREET

DOWNTOWN ALLIANCE INSTALLS WEB CAMERAS ON MAIN STREET
Two cameras stream live video of downtown street to internet.

Salt Lake City (October 22, 2012) - The Downtown Alliance has installed two cameras on a storefront, allowing all internet users 24 hour access to activity on Main Street.

Located on the Frank Building (270 S Main St) the cameras offer a 180 degree field of view, including the Gallivan Trax stop, the corner of 300 S and Main Street and sidewalk activity.

For several years Main Street was the center for the Downtown Rising project, as many buildings sat vacant or in various phases of renovation. Many of the challenges faced during construction have now given way to revitalization.

"The primary reason is to let people know about the great things happening on Main Street," said Downtown Alliance Executive Director, Jason Mathis. "In addition to that, if it helps prevent any illegal activity, that´s not a bad thing-but that would be the icing on the cake."

Many projects in the central business district were completed in the last several years, focusing much of downtown´s activity on and around Main Street. The opening of the City Creek Center has brought shoppers to the area, while new restaurants and street food vendors offered diners additional options. Many national corporations have opened large headquarter offices, bringing thousands of employees downtown, who can shop at new national retail stores, as well as emerging, local businesses.

Raising awareness to the center of downtown could appeal to visitors or residents looking to explore the bustling culture not found in other parts of the city or state. Increased curiosities in the wide variety options available on Main Street were also reasons to share access to the cameras.

The live feed to the cameras can be found at www.downtownslc.org/mainstreet

A READING OF TURQUOISE WIND BY KURT PROCTOR @ Salt Lake Acting Company (Salt Lake City, October 29)

SALT LAKE ACTING COMPANY’S NEW PLAY SOUNDING SERIES PRESENTS
A READING OF TURQUOISE WIND BY KURT PROCTOR
SLAC’s New Play Sounding Series presents a free reading of TURQUOISE WIND, by Kurt Proctor and directed by Keven Myhre, on Monday, October 29, 2012 at 7:00pm. The New Play Sounding Series is a part of SLAC’s outreach programming which provides an essential testing ground on which playwrights can see their work in progress and receive insightful feedback from the audience in a post-play discussion. We thank the Jarvis and Constance Doctorow Family Foundation for their support of this vital program.
TURQUOISE WIND is a mystical tale of three friends, Toni, Lisa and Charlotte, with three different outlooks on life, fulfillment and fate. When a storm blows into their Southern Utah town, it brings with it more than just the winds and floods, it also deposits the mysterious, young Dawn at the front door of Toni’s Moab rock shop. As these modern Western women deal with financial and idealistic conundrums, a miraculous and unexpected event will lead them to rethink their choices and beliefs.

Playwright Kurt Proctor says the idea for TURQUOISE WIND came to him in a dream. After scribbling down the ideas upon waking, he took the inspiration and wrote the play which he has further developed through workshops at the Denver Center Theatre and the New American Playwright Program in Cedar City, Utah. SLAC is excited to work with Kurt and present this moving, funny and intriguing play to Salt Lake City audiences as a part of our New Play Sounding Series.

The reading will be followed by a post-play discussion with the playwright, the director and the cast. Audience members will be invited to ask questions and share insight regarding the development of the production.

Artists of Bountiful/Davis Art Center (1997-2012) ….celebrating and saying goodbye to the building on Main Street and honoring former BDAC director Arley G.Curtz for his creativity and dedication to art and individual artists @ BDAC (Ends November 2nd)

The exhibit will end soon (Nov. 2).

BDAC will soon be vacating the building on Main Street where it has been housed for the past fifteen years. We want to make the most of this unique opportunity to remember and honor the wonderful artists who have exhibited their work, taught art classes and supported our programs in so many ways. It is also a great time to honor past director Arley Curtz for his contributions.

The building will be torn down in January and a new Bountiful City Hall will be built in its place.  BDAC will temporarily move to the Davis County Memorial Courthouse in Farmington while it’s permanent home, the current Bountiful City Hall, 790 South 100 East, is being renovated.

For the past fifteen years, hundreds of artists have exhibited and many have taught at Bountiful/Davis Art Center.  Though it would be impossible to exhibit all of these artists, the following have agreed to put one piece of art in the exhibit:
Aaron Bushnell, Ann Garrett, Anne Gregerson, Anne Marie and Garth Oborn, Adrian Van Suchtelen, Barbara Dowdle, Becky Hartvigsen, Ben Behunin, Bonnie and Denis Phillips, Carl Oelerich, Carl Purcell, Cary Henrie, Christopher Thornock, Clara Leachman, Claudia Sisemore, Connie Borup, Darl Thomas, Darryl Erdmann, Craig Bybee, Dianne and John Shaw, Diane Turner, Stan Elmer, Earl Jones, Erin W. Berrett, Gibbs Smith, Glen Hawkins, Jan Boardman, John Erickson, Jon Bouwhuis, Jou Jou Prochaska,  Joshua Toone, Phyllis Horne, Karen Horne, Larry Wade, Linnie Brown, Lester B. Lee, Mac Stevenson, Marilyn Read, Mark Robison, Marjorie McClure, Merrily Kulmer, Michal Onyon, Myrne Collier, Nancy Lund ,Nora Del Murdock, Osral Allred, Paul Mann, Pilar Pobil, Robert McKay, Randall Lake, Rob Colvin, Rebecca Mann, Robert Barrett, Roger Motzkus, Roger Cushing, Sam Wilson, Scott Durrant, Seth Garner, Sherry Rauch, Sherry Meidell, Simon Winegar, Steven Sheffield, Theresa Otteson, Tony Rasmussen, Trent Alvey, Van Chu, Willamarie Huelskamp, and Yevgeniy Zolotsev.

Art from the hand of beloved artists who have passed on including Norma Forsberg, Colleen Parker, Rose Ann Peterson, Ted Wassmer, Bevan Chipman, Lee Deffebach, Francis Zimbeaux, John White, LeConte Stewart, Harry Taylor and Sheila Mavin is exhibited.  Each of these artists played a role in the success of Bountiful/Davis Art Center and they continue to be greatly missed.

Arley G. Curtz was the director of Bountiful/Davis Art Center from 1993-2006.  He worked hard to bring the art center to the Main Street location and he contributed greatly to the fine reputation BDAC enjoys today.  His expertise and passion, gleaned from many years of working in the arts were the perfect formula to bring about a good foundation for BDAC to grow on while in this location.  This foundation has allowed BDAC to flourish, even in uncertain times, demonstrating to all that this art center is here to stay and will continue to be a vibrant, exciting center for the arts for years to come. His legacy is celebrated through his art and photography and some selections from the art collection of he and his wife Diane.

“A visual art center in Bountiful. In Davis County. Really ? Seems a novel idea. But wait - contemporary, abstract art created by individuals perhaps with beards, wearing sandals, free spirits, liberal thinkers. On the menu, offered in a city-owned gallery in arguably the most conservative county in conservative Utah. That really stretches the imagination. But, it's true; has been since 1974. The Bountiful/Davis Art Center has been a vibrant center for art - all kinds of art - for almost four decades. I had the pleasure and challenge of being it's director for more than one of these decades. Fact: the hundreds of artists from virtually every community in Utah have made this novel idea a reality. I salute them, one and all, and feel honored to have played a small part in the success of BDAC.”
Arley Curtz
Director, 1993-2006

The last exhibit at BDAC will the Annual Holiday Show, November 16 – December 22, 2012.

NEWS: Utah State History Cemetery Inventory Grants Now Available

Utah State History Cemetery Inventory Grants Now Available

Grant funds are now available to help municipal, private, and local cemeteries digitize their sexton records and make them available online.  Using these grants, cemeteries can create a database and map of their cemetery and burials.  The data will be available online on the Utah Cemeteries and Burials Database.  This database is one of the state's most popular online services, receiving 100,000+ hits per month.

Utah State History has been collecting burial information since 1997 and putting it online, cemetery by cemetery, as it becomes available.  The database currently contains more than 500 cemeteries, and Utah State History is working to add the rest, as well as to keep burial information updated.

These reimbursement grants require a 50/50 match (of time and/or money) and are limited to a maximum of $5,000 per cemetery and are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

If your local cemetery is interested in applying for grant funds to digitize sexton records, please contact Debbie Dahl at 801-245-7233 or email ddahl@utah.gov.
