Salt Lake City, UT: The Utah Arts Festival Gallery, housed in the Festival headquarters, is pleased to present Abstraction, works by Sonya Dinsdale, Jodi Steen and Todd Powelson from February 18 through March 11.
Sonya Dinsdale studied at the University of Utah, graduating with a BFA in studio arts and printmaking while working as a research assistant on the Utah Museum of Fine Arts African Art collection. Passion for African art landed her in art history graduate study at UCLA. She now works in the architectural industry and continues her art career. www.sonyadinsdale.com
Jodi Steen was born in Southern California. She attended Calvin College and follows in the foot steps of her father who is a gallery owner and an artist. She moved to Utah 1996 and has called Salt Lake City her home ever since. Big Eyed Women in Art Access Gallery
Art Access Gallery is pleased to present Big Eyed Women, a group show of 13 Utah women artists.
This group of women artists, who are all connected in some way to Brigham Young University, have been meeting informally over a period of time. They represent a variety of ages, a diversity of experience and a desire to explore women's issues through their art. They celebrate womanhood through their various forms of creativity and explore the common strand that is woven throughout their lives as women.
The Big Eyed Women are: Anne Gregerson, Ashley Mae Christensen, Cassandra Barney, Emily Carruth, Elizabeth Sanchez, Emily Fox, Hayley Labrum, Karina A. Cutler, Kirsti Ringger, Laura Rowley, Sunny Belliston Taylor, Von Allen and Whitney L. Johnson. Elizabeth Sanchez coordinated the exhibit.
Portals of Light in Access II Gallery
Access II Gallery is pleased to present Portals of Light, a solo exhibit featuring glass artist Sarinda Jones.
Jones offers an exhibition that reflects upon her recent experiences attending a private residency at North Lands in Lybster, Scotland. According to the artist, "this residency was a rare opportunity for each participant to explore a body of work related to the topic of kilnformed glass that is integrated into architecture, or inspired by the Scottish environment".
The residency included 13 students who represented five countries and five states. The residency's intent was not to make finished work but to explore ideas though drawing, model making, sampling, testing and critique. The group engaged in daily meetings to assess, share, review and comment on all of the projects as a group.

How many times have you heard that from your mother's lips? Your
teacher's lips? Or maybe you've even said it yourself.
The Utah Calligraphic Artists will show their efforts to keep the art
alive through an exhibit called “Eclectic Letters” at the Covey Center
for the Arts, opening Friday, Feb. 4 and running until Thursday, March
24.
The exhibit shows a variety of different calligraphic lettering
styles, from Roman, Italic, uncial, bookhand and neumand, according to
exhibit chairperson, Louona Tanner.
Tanner said that although calligraphy was the mainstay of handwriting
during the Renaissance era, there have also been numerous styles
developed in more contemporary times, which will also be displayed in
the Covey exhibit.
“Some of the more modern techniques even border on modern art,” Tanner
said. “Because of the repetitions the letter forms create.”
Tanner said the exhibit will also include six handmade books, which
will feature the calligraphers' art.
Tanner said she was very excited about this exhibit.
“We keep track of all the calligraphers in the state,” she said. “[The
Covey] is getting the best of the best. Many of the members of the
guild attend international conventions.”
One of the reasons for the exhibit, Tanner said, is to encourage
others to become involved in calligraphy.
“We invite people to come and join us,” she said. “The best way to
learn it is to be a part of the guild.”
“Utah Calligraphic Artists (UCA) is a non-profit organization for
calligraphers of all skills,” Tanner said in an email. “Joining UCA is
a great way to surround yourself with others who share your interest
and who will provide support and encouragement of your calligraphic
endeavors.”
UCA currently has more than 100 members from Utah and Idaho and
regularly holds meetings between Jan. and June, as well as Sept.
through Dec., inviting world-renowned calligraphers to do workshops
with guild members. More information about the guild can be found both
at the exhibit at the Covey and at www.utahcalligraphicartists.com.
To view the exhibit, visit the Covey Center, located at 425 W. Center
St. Provo. Normal operating hours are Monday through Thursday.10 a.m.
till 6 p.m., and Friday, 10 a.m. till 2 p.m. The gallery is also open
during any evening performance at the Covey Center.
