Salt Lake Design Week Offers Hands-on Workshops with Lab @ The Leo

Salt Lake City, UT:  Salt Lake Design Week, the city’s first week devoted to all aspects of design November 14-18, offer hands-on workshops at The Leonardo, Lab @ The Leo (209 East 500 South).
Lab @ The Leo is already proving to be a success with Salt Lake Design Week fans. Some Labs are already sold out and spots are filling quickly for the other sessions.
Most Labs are free, some include a small materials fee. Labs can accommodate 12 participants each, but there may be a few tickets available for sold out events at the door on the day of the event. Check the Design Week website for details.

Mon, Nov 14, 10 am–noon SOLD OUT
Leo Espinosa, an award winning Illustrator and Designer from Bogota, Colombia, whose work has been featured in a variety of publications, products, animated series and gallery shows worldwide. His short list includes The New York Times, Wired, Esquire, ESPN, The Wall Street journal, Fortune, TIME, The Boston Globe, Chronicle Books, Nickelodeon, Swatch, Hasbro, American Greetings and Coca-Cola. Leo’s illustrations have been recognized by American Illustration, Communication Arts, How, Pictoplasma, and awarded with two consecutive Silver Medals from The Society of Illustrators in 2009 and 2010.

Architecture:  Line-Plane-Volume and 3d rendering with Architectural Nexus
Mon, Nov 14, 2–4 pm
Lead architects from Architectural Nexus will engage Lab participants in the process of design to create great architecture. Using a combination of hands on methods, patrons will engage in the real challenge of problem seeking, and develop a solution with creative problem solving through architecture.

Product/Industrial Design 1 & 2: Espiritu Design

Discover design of medical and outdoor products with Theodore Espiritu and Keith Findling of Espiritu Design.

Sgt. Pepper Now: Jan Haworth
Wed, Nov 16, 2–4 pm
Join co-designer and Grammy Award winner, Jann Haworth, in a workshop inspired by her design of the Salt Lake City Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper album cover. Sgt. Pepper Now will challenge participants to create a new contemporary version of this iconic design. Material charge $15 (taken at door).

Letterpress 1 & 2: The Mandate Press

The Mandate Press is a modern letterpress operation based in Salt Lake City, Utah. Mandate Press make their own plates from digital files and print for local, national and international clients. The Mandate Press’ motto is: “Everything looks better letterpressed.” Letterpress brings an added level of sincerity and authenticity to a design and therefore an added value of sincerity and authenticity to printed materials. Their mission is to make letterpress viable again in a whole new way.

Salt Lake Design Week, November 14–18 will raise the public awareness of the impact that all design— graphic, product, fashion, architecture, etc.—has in Utah. Design Week will reach out to a diverse community of design professionals as well as local businesses, non-profits, entrepreneurs, students and more. The goal of helping local designers interact, collaborate, and learn from each other to build a stronger creative community.
