NOVEMBER IS MUSIC ENSEMBLES MONTH
AT SOUTHERN UTAH UNIVERSITY

Southern Utah University, Cedar City, Utah: From the glorious sounds of strings to the pulsating beat of percussion, Southern Utah University’s Department of Music offers an entertaining variety of free student concerts in November. On Monday, November 14th, the Woodwind and Brass Ensembles perform, followed by the Percussion Ensemble on Monday, November 21 and the String and Piano Ensembles appear on Tuesday, November 29th. All performances take place at Thorley Recital Hall in SUU’s Music Building. They begin at 7:30pm and are free and open to the public.

For the Woodwind and Brass Ensemble, the Brass Quintet, under the direction of Dr. Douglas Harris, will play “Sonata” by Johann Kessel, “3 Fugues on the Magnificant” by Johann Pachelbel, arranged by Kenneth Singleton, and Movements 3 and 4 of the “Percy Grainger Suite” by Percy Grainger, arranged Joseph Kreines. The Brass Choir will perform “Contrapunctus III” from the “Art of the Fugue” by Johann Sebastian Bach, arranged by Robert King, “Australian Up Country Tune” by Percy Grainger, arranged by Cliff Bainum and Movement I of “Symphony for Brass and Timpani” by Herbert Haufrecht. A highlight of the evening will be the world premiere of “Fantasy Chorale” by Jesse VanDenKooy, an SUU student. The Saxophone Ensemble will perform Eric Ewazen’s “Rhapsody for Saxophone Quartet” under the direction of Dr. Thomas Herb. The evening also includes performances of several short compositions by the Woodwind Ensemble under the direction of Dr. Virginia Stitt.

There is definitely a diverse range of music to be performed by the Percussion Ensemble. Under the direction of Dr. Lynn Vartan, the ensemble’s program includes “Dystopia,” a spooky, supernatural sounding piece for a percussion orchestra of 13 players, “Octabones,” a virtuosic duel for to marimbas where the musicians play on the others’ marimba, and “Saura,” an elegant arrangement for a choral work by Toru Takemitsu showing the softer side of percussion music.

Associate Professor Xun Sun leads the String Ensemble and their program will include works by Johann Sebastian Bach, Joseph Hadyn, Pyotor Ilyich Tchaikovsky and George Gershwin. Leading the Piano Ensemble is Dr. Christian Bohnenstengel. His students will perform such works as Johann Sebastian Bach’s “Esurientes implevit bonis” from “Magnificat in D Major, BWV 243,” a selection of songs by George Gershwin and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s classic “Eine kleine Nachtmusik.”

Don’t miss these exceptional evenings of music. For more information on the SUU College of Performing and Visual Arts events, please call the Arts Hotline at (435) 865-8800, or visit www.suu.edu/arts.
