Special Needs Concert @ USUO (SLC: May 20)

Update: The concert for children with autism and their families has been moved from Capitol Theatre to Abravanel Hall.

Utah Symphony | Utah Offers two Performances to Meet Special Needs

Two performances will be offered to meet the needs of the visually-impaired community and children with autism

SALT LAKE CITYUtah Symphony | Utah Opera (USUO) will hold two events during the month of May to meet two different special needs. Members of the blind and visually-impaired community are invited to attend a dress rehearsal of Utah Opera’s production of Suor Angelica and Gianni Schicchi on May 12, 2010 starting at 6:00 pm at Capitol Theatre. On Thursday, May 20, 2010 at 7:00 pm, Utah Symphony | Utah Opera will present a concert for children with autism and their families at Capitol Theatre.

The free performance for the visually-impaired audience on May 12, 2010 will begin with Artistic Director Christopher McBeth and Education Director Paula Fowler giving a presentation about the production, costumes and set while prepared fabric samples of costumes (with Braille labels) are passed around. Braille translations and large print plot synopses will be available, as well as headsets with a play-by-play description of the stage action.

Registration is required for this event; please call 801-585-2213 or 801-532-5443 by May 10 to register.

On May 20, 2010, children with autism and their families are invited to a performance at Capitol Theatre featuring the Utah Symphony and the Utah Opera Ensemble Resident Artists. Associate Conductor David Cho will lead the orchestra in the 45-minute program featuring pieces by Mozart, Rossini, Humperdinck and Offenbach (full program details below).

“It’s often difficult for families with autistic children to attend cultural events where the audience is asked to remain quiet and still. This concert provides an environment where parents can bring their children without worrying about behavior that would be considered disruptive in other concerts,” said Paula Fowler, Director of Education for USUO. The concert was created for children with autism and their families, but all families with special needs children are welcome.

Registration is required for this free event. Please register on-line at www.usuoeducation.org by May 19.

For more information on either performance, please call 801-869-9090 or 801-869-9091.
