MYRIAD GENETICS ESTABLISHES CHARITABLE PROGRAM TO GIVE BACK TO SALT LAKE COMMUNITY
- Ballet West and Pioneer Theatre Receive Inaugural Awards of $100,000 Each -
Salt Lake City, August 3, 2010 Myriad Genetics, Inc. (NASDAQ: MYGN) announced today that it has established a Charitable Giving Program. The Program aims to enrich the lives of people living along the Wasatch Front in Utah by supporting and fostering local cultural and arts organizations, as well as help the needy by assisting local charities financially and through Myriad employee community service.
The Charitable Giving Program was founded after suggestions by Myriads employees who have a sincere desire to improve and give back to the community in which they live. The Program, which will give at least $200,000 to worthy organizations selected each year, will be funded through a combination of Company and Myriad employee donations.
We have been corporate citizens of Salt Lake City for nearly 20 years and are pleased to be in a position to give back to our community, said Peter D. Meldrum, President and Chief Executive Officer of Myriad. I am also incredibly proud of our employees who are so committed to serving our community both financially and by donating their time to important charitable endeavors.
This year, Ballet West and Pioneer Theatre Company have been selected as the inaugural recipients of the Charitable Giving Program. Myriad donated $100,000 to Ballet West in support of the creation of new ballet works and innovative, novel choreography, and donated $100,000 to Pioneer Theatre Company in support of its programming including its New Play Initiative which commissions the creation of new plays and also produces and presents world premieres in Salt Lake City.
Ballet West, established in 1963, ranks among the top professional ballet companies in America. Ballet West has recently appeared at the 2009 Fall for Dance Festival at New York Citys City Center, the 2009 Laguna Dance Festival, and the 2008 Ballet Across America festival at Washington D.C.s Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Ballet West also provides education and outreach programs for all communities throughout the State of Utah. Last year alone, over 80,000 students were exposed to dance, which enlightened, challenged, motivated and edified their minds and spirits.
Ballet West is honored to have been selected as one of the initial grant recipients of this superb Charitable Giving initiative, said Ballet West Executive Director Johann Jacobs. This program is a leading example of outstanding corporate stewardship and will allow Ballet West to continue to produce new works of the highest caliber.
Pioneer Theatre Company, established in 1962, is Utahs premier professional theatre. Pioneer Theatre is recognized nationally as a leader among regional theatres and was the first regional theatre in the United States to be awarded rights to produce Les Misrables. Pioneer Theatre has produced over a dozen world premieres to the delight of its audience. Pioneer Theatre Company provides free and discounted tickets to over 15,000 students from secondary schools and colleges and Universities throughout Utah, providing many young people with their first opportunity to experience live, Broadway-quality theatre.
Obviously we couldn't be more thrilled at being one of two inaugural recipients of a very generous grant from Myriad Genetics, said Pioneer Theatre Companys Managing Director, Chris Lino. It is particularly encouraging, in these challenging economic times, to have a local company step forward and say, We think supporting the arts in this community is important, and were willing to make an institutional commitment to do so. The fact that the program was inspired by the employees of Myriad, and that this is a case of the world of science and research coming to the aid of the arts makes the gift all the more special.
