Southern Utah University, Cedar City, Utah: When musicians blend together, the harmony created is a work of art. Collaboration!, A Faculty Recital will be presented by SUU’s Department of Music on Monday, February 11, 2013 at starting at 7:30pm. The performance will be at Thorley Recital Hall in SUU’s Music Building and the event is free and the general public is encouraged to attend.

Under the supervision of Dr. Lawrence Johnson, Associate Professor of Voice, the evening will feature faculty members collaborating on a variety of instrumental and vocal selections. Dr. Adam Lambert, Assistant Professor and Director of Bands, trumpet, and his wife, Michelle Lambert, trombone, will perform "Fandango" by Joseph Turrin. Soprano Carol Ann Modesitt, Professor and Director of Opera and Voice, soprano, flutist Dr. Virginia Stitt, Professor of Woodwinds, and Dr. Willem van Schalkwyk, piano, join together on three selections "Une Flute Invisible" by Camille Saint-Saëns, "La Flute Enchantée" by Maurice Ravel and "Soir Païen" by Philippe Gaubert. Dr. Christian Bohnenstengel, Assistant Professor of Piano, and Dr. van Schalkwyk will perform the piano duet "Hungarian Dance No. 6" by Johannes Brahms. Dr. Johnson, tenor, and Jackie Jackson, soprano, will perform a duet from Act One of The Elixir of Love by Gaetano Donizetti, accompanied by Tracey Bradshaw. Also on the program is a performance by Xun Sun, Associate Professor and Director of Orchestral Activities, of Antonin Dvorak’s “Sonatina in G major” on violin.

According to Dr. Johnson, “the theme, ‘Collaboration,’ will emphasize to both our students and patrons the unique process of our faculty working together as artists to produce extraordinary music that not only entertains but also enhances the musical experience.”

The Southern Utah University College of Performing and Visual Arts is comprised of nationally accredited departments of Art and Design, Music, Theatre Arts and Dance, as well as a graduate program in Arts Administration and the Center for Shakespeare Studies. Fundraiser @ Ten Thousand Villages-Utah (SLC 2/1)

Ten Thousand Villages-Utah Is On The Move!

 Salt Lake City, UT - January 23, 2013 – Ten Thousand Villages-Utah will host a fundraising open house on February 1, 4:00-7:00 pm in its store at 120 South Main Street, Salt Lake City. 

 “Our store will quite literally be on the move in the near future and is relocating at the end of March,” said Matt Thorne, Board Chair. “At the February 1 event, our guests will vote with a donation toward their preferred new location in Salt Lake City.”

Board Members will be on hand to answer questions about the store and the potential move locations, as well as provide information on how to volunteer with the organization.

“The February 1 event is also our opportunity to publicly welcome Kimberly Wolf as our new Executive Director,” said Mr. Thorne. Kimberly has great experience, a strong commitment to our mission of fair trade, and an enormous amount of enthusiasm.”

Ten Thousand Villages-Utah has fresh, new inventory in place just in time for Valentines’ Day. The store, which heavily relies on volunteer assistance, features products from more than 130 artisan groups in some 38 countries.

NEWS: Two Teens From Spy Hop Win Contest

SALT LAKE CITY, UT (January 29, 2013) — Two teenagers from Spy Hop’s yearlong music program have won first place in the GRAMMY Foundation® and MusiCares® Teens! Make Music Contest for their creative interpretation of the dangers and impact of drug and alcohol use. Vinny Cavalcanti (18, West High School) and Nick Miller (16, Rowland Hall) have won backstage passes to the GRAMMY awards rehearsal on Friday, February 8, an iPad, a cash prize and an opportunity to release their song with Clarity Way Records. This nationwide contest is a collaboration with The Partnership at Drugfree.org and a part of National Drug Facts Week.

Nick and Vinny were a part of the Spy Hop band, Mystique, and wrote the song, “Psychological Cool Guy” for their debut album “Which Boots, Witch Boots”. The song depicts how an individual can succumb to drug and alcohol addiction and reveals the deep concern friends have for his unhealthy lifestyle as illustrated in the lyrics, “I’ve been meaning to talk to you about something for a while, about your problems with the syrup, and your problem with denial.” Jeremy Chatelain, Spy Hop’s Musical Arts Instructor said, “One of the goals of Musicology is to push students to think about what they’re writing and what the message is.  They usually begin the year with no idea that they can write conscientious, thoughtful songs.”                  Vinny Cavalcanti, Nick Miller (photo by David Newkirk)

“This program provides an exceptional opportunity to showcase the combined work of the GRAMMY Foundation, MusiCares, and The Partnership at Drugfree.org, and it provides a unique opportunity for teens to share their perspectives on the issues of addiction,” said Neil Portnow, President/CEO of The Recording Academy, the GRAMMY Foundation, and MusiCares.

This is the second national award for the band; they also won a prestigious first place award from Adobe Youth Voices, the signature philanthropy initiative of the Adobe Foundation.

About the Musicology Program
Musicology is an intensive, yearlong band experience where participants ages 14 - 19 learn songwriting, production and recording.  The class forms a band that performs in venues around Salt Lake and releases an album at the end of the year.

For the past six years, all eyes have turned toward the Great Apes to answer the most pressing question -WHO WILL WIN THE SUPER BOWL?

Join us for our 6th annual Primate Pick, Thursday, January 31, 10:30 a.m., in the Great Ape building - as Eli the Orangutan predicts who will win the Super Bowl.


Eli, the big male orangutan, will enter his enclosure where he will be faced with logos of the San Francisco 49ers and the Baltimore Ravens. Whichever 'helmet' he touches first will be the winner of the big game!

This is a great chance to get footage of our primates active and playful, and a great local tie-in to other Super Bowl coverage. 

Crews should park in the Western-most section of the main lot, near the white temporary tent (the main entrance is under construction). Check in with Erica Hansen by 10:15 a.m. so photographers have plenty of time to set up - Eli acts fast!

NEWS: Gina Bachauer International Piano Foundation Welcomes New Artistic Director


The board of Trustees of the Gina Bachauer International Piano Foundation eagerly greets new Artistic Director, Douglas Humphreys, and bids fond farewell to Founder and visionary, Artistic Director, Dr. Paul Pollei.  Upon his retirement, Paul Pollei will retain the title of Founder and Artistic Director, Emeritus.

Dr. Paul Pollei has been a champion of piano competitions, a much sought after adjudicator,a quintessential teacher and lecturer, presenter of master classes, and a brilliant performer. It would be difficult to catalogue his influence among pianists, teachers and audiences, or to find a contemporary pianist who does not have a fond memory and a story to tell about his or her interaction with Paul Pollei.

During the 37 years of Bachauer competition history, approximately 1,500 pianists have competed, more than $430,000 prize money has been awarded, and countless careers have been launched. The Bachauer competition format has never been static. Paul Pollei led the way with such innovations as competitors free choice of repertoire, two rounds of competition with no eliminations, and organizing separate competitions for three different
age groups of aspiring pianists. These innovations have been emulated by many other piano competitions.

Douglas Humpherys was the Gold Medal winner of the first Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition in 1976. A Steinway Artist, his concert career has spanned more than three decades across four continents. His academic career is no less impressive with advanced degrees from Juilliard School (MM) and the Eastman School of Music (DMA), where he is currently a Professor and Chair of the Piano Department. While continuing his position at Eastman, he will perform the role of Artistic Director for the Gina Bachauer International Piano Foundation, facilitated by electronic communication
and his frequent presence in Salt Lake City.

Douglas Humpherys has collaborated with Paul Pollei for many years. They have been University colleagues, have served together as jurors at International piano competitions, and have jointly participated in numerous piano festivals and educational projects. Using this experience, Mr. Humpherys founded the Eastman Young Artists International Piano Competition and Festival in 1997. Mr. Humpherys has served as chair of the Bachauer jury ten times and as a jury member on four other occasions. We, the Board of Trustees, are confident that Douglas Humpherys will honor the legacy and vision of Paul Pollei, by
maintaining the Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition as one of the premiere musical events in Utah, and by continuing its place of distinction in the worldwide piano community.

Performance: Authur Greene @ Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center (SLC)


The 1978 Gina Bachauer International Artists Piano Competition Gold Medalist returns to Salt Lake City February 8th for a solo performance at the Jeanne Wagner Theater, Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center at 7:30 PM.

Born in New York, Arthur Greene studied at Juilliard. Mr. Greene was a Gold Medal winner in the William Kapell and Gina Bachauer International Piano Competitions, and a top laureate at the Busoni International Competition. He performed the complete solo piano works of Johannes Brahms in a series of six programs in Boston, and recorded the Complete Etudes of Alexander Scriabin for Supraphon. He has performed the 10 Sonata Cycle of Alexander Scriabin in SofiaKievSalt Lake City, and other venues.  Mr. Greene has performed with the Philadelphia Orchestra, the San FranciscoUtah and National Symphonies, the Czech National Symphony, the Tokyo Symphony, the National Symphony of Ukraine. He has played recitals in Carnegie Hall, Kennedy Center, Moscow Rachmaninov Hall, Tokyo Bunka Kaikan, Lisbon Sao Paulo Opera House, Hong Kong City Hall and concert houses in Shanghai and Beijing. He has toured Japan 12 times. He was an Artistic Ambassador to Serbia, Kosovo, and Bosnia for the United States Information Agency.

Arthur Greene’s program will feature the works of Alexander Scribian accompanied by a visual presentation.  Mystic, visionary, virtuoso and composer, Scriabim dedicated his life to creating musical works, which would, as he believed, open the portals of the spiritual world.

“Soup N’ Bowl” Event coming right up on March 1, 2012-Get tickets now

The St. George Art Museum’s annual “Soup N’ Bowl” luncheon and fundraiser will take place Friday, March 1, 2013 between 11:00 AM and 1:30 PM in the Social Hall on the Museum’s campus at 200 North Main in St. George. 
This annual community event gives residents the opportunity to enrich their lives with art, have a light lunch, choose a hand-crafted bowl to take home and support the Art Museum at the same time.
A silent auction will give attendees a chance to bid on pottery works of art made by local professional artists including Glen Blakley, Dr. John M. & Suzanne Jennings, and Joe Viers, as well as pieces from Art Festival ceramic artists.  Those in attendance will see the retail value of items up for bid and be able to write their bids on paper forms next to the article.  Winners will be announced at the end of the luncheon.
Bowls crafted by Blakley, Jennings and Viers and many other local potters will be added to the collection of bowls to choose from at the event, as well as others made by students in the pottery programs at DSC, and other schools.  Those who pay the $20 luncheon fee will be able to choose a bowl to take home from this collection.  Bargain Bowls will also be available to purchase for attendees.
            The “Soup N’ Bowl” provides an excellent opportunity for residents to support their local Art Museum and at the same time choose quality pottery art pieces from local artists.
            Past annual “Soup N’ Bowls” have raised significant amounts that the Art Museum has been able to use to support displays and purchase paintings for the Museum’s permanent collection.
