FEBRUARAY 2013 ACTIVITIES AT THE OGDEN NATURE CENTER
 
Picture-Perfect Winter Photo ContestShoot pictures at the Ogden Nature Center through January 31, 2013
Entry deadline: Monday, February 4
Awards ceremony: Saturday, February 9 at 10 am at the Ogden Nature Center
$5 per entry
Open to ages 8 – adult 
Entries will be accepted in two age groups -- ages 8-15 and ages 16-adult
Winter is a terrific time to capture the wonders of the Ogden Nature Center, so grab your camera and enter the Center's second annual "Picture Perfect Winter Photo Contest.”  Photos must be shot at the Ogden Nature Center between Jan. 2 and Jan. 31, 2013, during regular center hours.  Entries must be in one of two categories: 1) General Nature Shots, which includes wild animals, or 2) Resident Animals, which encompasses Ogden Nature Center’s caged education animals and the Nature Center’s two resident wild turkeys. Entrants may enter only one photo in each category for their age group. Photos submitted for judging must be no larger than 8x10 inches and must be mounted on cardboard or foam board.  Please no frames or glass.  Include the entrant's full name, age, telephone number, e-mail address, street address and entry category on the back.
 
Preschool Discovery Days – Frozen LandscapesChoose a date and time:

9:30 am, 11 am or 1 pm on any of the dates above
$5 per child/parent member
$6 per child/parent non-members
Ages 3-5
Discover the complicated patterns of crystals and snow flakes, enjoy cocoa, songs and fun! Make a salt crystal snowflake to take home.  Learn about the creature comforts of the plants and animals of the Nature Center’s frozen landscape. Programs are one hour. Pre-registration is required. Space is limited. Please call 801-621-7595 to register and for details.  
 
Wild Wednesdays: Oh Deer! Wednesday, February 6, 3:45 pm
Free for ONC members
$2 children / $3 seniors / $4 adults
All ages welcome
Large ears that never stop moving….  Antlers that grow back every year….  The ability to run at speeds over 45 miles per hour! What is it?  Mule Deer!  Join us for a special program about one our favorite and most fascinating mammals that call Utah and the Ogden Nature Center home.  Join an Ogden Nature Center teacher/naturalist as we search for live deer, and play a fun and educational game all about this antlered animal.  Please meet in the Visitor Center.
 
Nature is for LoversFriday, February 8 at 7-9 pm
$30 members / $35 non-members
Ages: 21 and older only
Come to the Ogden Nature Center for an evening of wine and desserts and learn about love wildlife style! Play a fun couples guessing game about animal and plant mating rituals, meet one of February’s feathered lovers and take an optional romantic night walk around the trails. Space is limited and spots fill up quickly. Pre-registration is required to 801-621-7595. Please RSVP by 4 pm on Thursday, February 7.
 
Wild Wednesdays: Wild Romance: A Special Valentines Day Program Wednesday, February 13, 3:45 pm
Free for ONC members
$2 children / $3 seniors / $4 adults
All ages welcome
Have you ever wondered if animals flirt with one another?  Come find out during our special Valentine’s Day program.  Meet some of the Ogden Nature Center’s resident birds and reptiles and discover the unique ways these animals attract a partner.  Then help us make nature themed Valentines for the birds. Please meet in the Visitor Center.
 
Scout SaturdaysSaturday, February 19
9 am – Native vs. Invasive
10 am – Conservation
11 am – Venomous Reptiles
Cost: $5 per scout
The Ogden Nature Center provides the perfect outdoor classroom for scout activities. Have an Ogden Nature Center teacher/naturalist help your scout pass off merit badge requirements during these 45-minute classes.  Reservations and a non-refundable deposit are required.  For more information on the requirements for each badge please refer to www.ogdennaturecenter.org/education/scouting-programs.
 
Wild Wednesdays: Stinky Tales – Badgers, Otters, & Ferrets –Oh My!Wednesday, February 20, 3:45 pm

Investigate the smelly world of mustelids. Explore a local endangered mustelid and find out why the skunk, although smelly, doesn’t fit in this group anymore. Please meet in the Visitor Center.
 
2013 Ogden Seed ExchangeSaturday, February 23
10 am  -- mini workshop on starting seeds and soil improvement
11 am – 1 pm – seed swap
In the L.S. Peery Education Bldg. at the Ogden Nature Center, 966 W. 12th Street
No admission fee, donations to Ogden Nature Center gratefully accepted
Bring open pollinated and/or heirloom seeds to trade or sell.  Be sure to bring envelopes or baggies for your trades or purchases.

Join an Ogden Nature Center teacher/naturalist for a Wild Wednesday program focused on some of the smartest groups of birds in our world—the corvids.  Listen to a true tale about a special raven and then meet the Ogden Nature Center’s most curious and playful raven, Cronk.  Please meet in the Visitor Center.
