TONY NOMINATED BROADWAY, FILM AND TELEVISION ACTRESS COMES TO SALT LAKE CITY FOR EXCLUSIVE WORKSHOPS
As advocates for arts education programming, Salt Lake Acting Company is thrilled to partner with actress Alyson Reed, the loveably loopy drama teacher Ms. Darbus in Disney’s HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL series, to present a series of theatre activities, including Active Learning Assemblies, Family Night, and an Actor’s Workshop for local students the week of January 28, 2013.
Alyson has over 40 years of professional experience as an actress, director and private coach in TV, film and theatre. Having worked with such luminaries as Hal Prince, Bob Fosse, Michael Bennett and Sir Richard Attenborough, her acting credits range from; a Tony nomination during her 15 years on Broadway, to starring as Cassie in the film version of A CHORUS LINE, to numerous guest stars, pilots and movies-of-the-week, to her portrayal of Ms. Darbus in Disney’s HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL series.
Elementary School Learning Assemblies – starting January 28, 2013 - a new edition to our educational outreach programming, SLAC will bring Alyson to five Beverley Taylor Sorensen schools, including two Title I elementary schools, through a weeklong succession of free educational and entertaining assemblies. Alyson will engage and empower over 3,000 students through the arts at Canyon Rim Elementary, Washington Elementary, Nibley Park Elementary, Wasatch Elementary and Bennion Elementary. In Alyson’s words: “The overwhelming response to [HIGH SCHOOL MUSCIAL] has been more than gratifying and fulfilling. Seeing such a heartfelt reaction to the arts becoming ‘cool’ again, especially for children and tweens, has motivated and inspired me to launch The Active-Learning Series. Portraying a character that is highly relatable to kids has given me an additional ‘in’ and opportunity to work with children from every walk of life. Teaching has always been one of the greatest joys of mine. That magic moment when a child ‘gets it’, is just that….MAGIC!”
Family Night - January 31, 2013 at 6:30pm - Alyson will have an evening of theatre games, improvisation, scene work, mock interviews, a Q&A session, photo op and much more fun for the whole family. For $5 anyone interested in learning and participating in the world of acting can come to Clayton Middle School and enjoy a special experience with their families.
Actor’s Workshop - February 2, 2013 at 11:00am - Alyson will conduct a master class for more serious students of acting ages 12-18 at Salt Lake Acting Company. This will be an amazing opportunity for students to learn acting techniques and exercises from an accomplished, engaging teacher. Alyson’s goal is, “Teaching and encouraging smart, self-aware actors to use their strengths and 'weaknesses' to bring their own uniqueness to the work.” Alyson will use her years of experience in theatre and screen to offer students unique insights to scene and character work.
Rosanne Henderson, the Salt Lake School District Supervisor of Fine Arts adds, “I can’t wait to see students who may not have opportunities to learn theatre skills work with someone who will get them excited about theatre and learning in general. She is fun, enthusiastic, motivating, engaging, and would be a great experience for all the students involved. It would be a memory that they would treasure all of their lives.”
Salt Lake Acting Company is grateful to the following sponsors for giving students and families the opportunity to engage with Alyson Reed, who brings a wealth of experience, knowledge and fun to our community:
