Bonneville: The Fastest Place on Earth
Free Public Lecture by LandSpeed Louise at the UMFA on Sunday, August 19 at 1 pm
Salt Lake City, UT – The Utah Museum of Fine Arts (UMFA) is pleased to present “Bonneville: The Fastest Place on Earth,” a free public lecture by journalist and automotive historian "LandSpeed Louise" Ann Noeth. The lecture will take place on Sunday, August 19, 2012 at 1:00 pm in the UMFA Katherine W. and Ezekiel Dumke Jr. Auditorium in the Marcia and John Price Building on the University of Utah campus. This program is presented in conjunction with the UMFA’s current exhibition, Speed: The Art of the Performance Automobile.
During her lecture, LandSpeed Louise will discuss the riveting history and notable tales of the famed Bonneville Salt Flats. She will cover the mishaps and victories of drivers who "shot the salt" in a quest to add their names to the list of land speed record holders. Special attention will be paid to both Ab Jenkins and his famed "Mormon Meteor III” Bonneville racer, currently on view in the Speed exhibition at the UMFA.
This talk offers the non-racer the opportunity to get a clear understanding of how ordinary people have achieved extraordinary goals for the past 60 years. Attendees will learn how speedsters came to the salt, how a record is set, how the racecourse is laid out, and how to get the most out of a visit to what she calls "the best mechanical circus on earth."
Louise Ann Noeth founded LandSpeed Productions in 1984 after numerous years of working as a freelance journalist. Since that time, her work has been published all over the world. Her column, entitled "Fuel for Thought," appears on a monthly basis in the GoodGuys Gazette and provides an insider's opinion on current land speed racing.
LandSpeed Louise’s book, Bonneville Salt Flats: The Fastest Place on Earth, has received critical acclaim and will be republished in 2014 to commemorate the 100-year anniversary of the earliest Salt Flat races. With a rich background in racing culture, including numerous years as an automotive journalist and experience as a professional auto racer of a 250 mph jet-dragster, LandSpeed Louise is considered by many to be a premiere presence in the automotive arena.
Speed: The Art of the Performance Automobile is an exhibition on view at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts through September 16, 2012. Speed features 19 of the world’s finest and fastest race cars from the past century.
