Art Access Gallery Announces
Exhibits with Jodi Steen & Jeff Juhlin, and Denise Crane
Salt Lake City, Utah - June 7, 2010 Art Access Gallery is pleased to present the work of two contemporary artists from Salt Lake City - Jodi Steen and Jeff Juhlin. This joint exhibit will hang from June 18 through July 9, with the Artists' Reception taking place on Friday June 18 from 6 to 9 PM.
Juhlin calls his recent series of work " Grounded Abstraction". The imagery is minimal and alludes to deep space, the landscape, agricultural patterns, topography and other natural and manmade references. He says, "An important aspect to this work is process, including construction and deconstuction, adding and taking away. All of these processes are found in nature and are a natural consequence of the encaustic process which is an ideal medium for this type of exploration".
For the last six years, Juhlin has been almost exclusively using the encaustic technique, which is a painting method where color-pigmented beeswax is melted, applied to a surface and reheated to fuse the paint into a smooth or textured finish. Encaustic has a long history, but it has been experiencing a recent resurgence in popularity due to the increased convenience and safety of heating appliances. The durability of encaustic is due to the fact that beeswax is impervious to moisture, molecularly stable and will not deteriorate over time.
Jodie Steen's "Land, Sky, Water" series revolves around both a relationship to the horizon line and color combinations. According to Steen, each design is first based on the amount of sky, and then the proportion of the land, or water, fall into place.
Steen explains that she is "influenced by the sights and scenery of the places I have lived: the southern California hills, the fall foliage of northern Michigan, the wide expanse of Utah's desert landscape - these are the colors and textures that stir my soul and move me to paint".
Access II Gallery is pleased to present the abstract work of Denise Crane with "Living Within My Head."
Crane, who has a BFA in Art Education from the University of Utah and an MA in painting from Adams State College in Alamosa, Colorado, uses her art as a healing response to depression. Crane's life has consisted of dealing at an early age with an alcoholic and abusive family member, as well as a suicidal parent. She has since dealt with her own personal addictions and other mental health issues.
As a result, Crane explains that she has made use of her art to create a non-judgmental space to deal with her stress and tension. Because of this, Crane's autobiographical paintings are strong and unabashed in their content, allowing viewers into her stressful world.
