Highlights of the Collection Tour
6:30 pm on the first Wednesday of the month and 1:30 pm on all Saturdays and Sundays | FREE with general museum admission
Experience the UMFA galleries through a thirty-minute tour with a docent. No pre-registration necessary.
Making Art: Mom, Dad and Me
Session 2: 10 am-12 pm on August 7-10 | $80 + $20 special fee
A class for parents and their pre-schoolers or pre-pre-schoolers, ages 2-5! The UMFA will provide participants with a hands-on art studio experience inspired by art from our collection. Participants will create one-of-a-kind paintings, masks, sculptures and frames for beginning artists, with storytelling, hands-on art objects and strolls through the galleries. Students will conclude the course with their own art opening in the UMFA classroom. To register, call 801.581.6984.
"Against The Clock: The Allure of Unrestored Cars"
Lunch Seminar presented by David Burroughs, Founder Bloomington Gold®, SURVIVOR® and Prove It®10 am-2 pm on Saturday, August 11 | $50 + $12 special fee
When to preserve and when to restore? Participants will learn the significance of collecting and preserving unrestored factory original cars from an industry leader. Students will gain insider knowledge on what defines an unrestored car and how to spot gems in the rough. Class includes admission to the exhibition Speed: The Art of the Performance Automobile and boxed lunch.
Third Saturday for Families: Clothespin Puppets
1-4 pm on Saturday, August 18 | FREE
The museum's artwork is filled with fantastic characters. Participants can get inspiration from Raven, Zotz, or Padiusir to create their own puppet character. They can then perform with their puppet in the Museum’s puppet theater. This program is funded in part by the Salt Lake County Zoo, Arts and Parks fund.
Speed Lecture: "Bonneville: The Fastest Place on Earth" by Landspeed Louise
1 pm on Sunday, August 19 | FREE
Attendees will hear riveting tales of the Bonneville Salt Flats as told by famous automotive historian, journalist, and author, "Landspeed Louise" Ann Noeth. Landspeed Louise will pay special attention to Ab Jenkins and the "Mormon Meteor III" in her lecture that will explore the victories of those who "shoot the salt" in a quest to add their names to the list of land speed record holders.
Speed Films: Racing Dreams
7 pm on Wednesday, August 22 | FREE
From go-kart champs, NASCAR winners are bred––or so goes the thinking of the drivers involved in the World Karting Association's National Pavement Series. This documentary follows three of the series' top young contenders. (2009, Documentary, PG)

Speed: The Art of the Performance Automobile

This blockbuster exhibition will showcase 19 of the world’s finest and fastest automobiles. The exhibition will feature a century of legends on wheels that exemplify premier aerodynamics, engineering, art and design of their era. From the ultra-cool 1957 Jaguar XK-SS Roadster (once owned by Steve McQueen) to the 1938 Mormon Meteor III–the famous Bonneville racer that holds more long distance speed records than any other automobile in history–this exhibition is sure to get art-loving engines revving. Cars are a pervasive symbol in American art and pop culture. Symbolizing such dichotomous ideas as masculinity and femininity, speed and leisure, industry and nature, the individual and the collective, and the glamorous and the mundane, the automobile lends itself to many interpretations. Photographers have long been inspired by the automobile, attempting to capture and examine its multiple meanings through a lens. This group of photographs from the UMFA's collection showcases the diversity of ways artists have depicted and interpreted the omnipresent automobile.
Res Mortis: Matters of Death
Now on View
Experience the UMFA’s ancient Egyptian, Greek, and Roman collection in its new home on the second floor. The Egyptian gallery features the twenty-sixth dynasty anthropoid coffin of Padiusir (a visitor favorite), along with other intriguing objects that explore the economic aspects of preparing for the afterlife. The revitalized Greek and Roman gallery highlights the UMFA's recently conserved Apulian funerary amphora and the marble sarcophagus of a young Roman nobleman.
