July 19, 2012- The School of Music at the University of Utah is proud to announce that Dr. Barlow Bradford has accepted the Ellen Neilson Barnes Presidential Endowed Chair for Choral Studies.  In this position, Bradford will conduct both the University of Utah Singers and the A Cappella Choir, among other academic duties.  Bradford was selected after an extensive national search, and his appointment began on July 1, 2012.

The Ellen Neilson Barnes Presidential Endowed Chair for Choral Studies was established by Kem C. and Carolyn B. Gardner for the benefit of promoting excellence in choral music and studies in the School of Music.  The endowed chair is named in honor of Mrs. Gardner’s mother, Ellen Nielson Barnes.  Mrs. Barnes was a talented musician and chorister and was a strong proponent of the value of choral music and studies.  Appointment to this chair recognizes the extraordinary effort and achievement on the part of Bradford.

Dr. James Gardner, Director of the School of Music said of the selection, “I am excited about the artistry and scholarship Bradford brings to this university.  All of us in the School of Music are enthusiastic about this new chapter for choral conducting.  We look forward to Bradford’s work and his continuing leadership in the profession.”

Bradford has won numerous awards and commissions, including most recently the 2011 Chorus America Dale Warland Commission Award. Over the course of his extraordinary musical career, Bradford has distinguished himself as a conductor, composer, arranger, pianist, organist, and teacher.  He co-founded the Utah Chamber Artists in 1991 and has led that organization to international acclaim including the 2010 Utah Best of State Award for a Musical Group and the Utah Governor’s Mansion Award in the Arts in 2011.  He was the Founder and Music Director of the Orchestra at Temple Square and the Associate Director of the Tabernacle Choir.

Bradford has a Doctor of Musical Arts and a Master of Music in Conducting from the University of Southern California, and received his Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance from the University of Utah.  Bradford has served as an associate professor on the faculty of Brigham Young University- Hawaii.  Prior to this appointment, he has been serving as a Visiting Professor and Interim Director of Choral Studies at the University of Utah conducting the choirs and has just returned from touring with the University Singers in Hawaii.  The College of Fine Arts is delighted to have Barlow fill this valued presidential endowed chair position and we enthusiastically look forward to his time leading the choral arts in our College.  For more information see finearts.utah.edu.
