Salt Lake City – The Utah Museum of Fine Arts (UMFA) invites families to celebrate drawing through art-making, fun activities, and performances at Artful Afternoon, the Museum’s free, family-friendly festival from 1 to 4 pm on Saturday, July 20. This year’s program, “Oodles of Doodles,” encourages visitors to let their imaginations roam free as they explore the many ways to draw—with ribbon wands, Spirographs, yarn, and chalk, to name a few. All ages and abilities are welcome at this free event, which includes complimentary admission into all of the Museum’s galleries.
Activities, to be held inside the Marcia and John Price Museum Building and outdoors on the patio, include a number of creative drawing activities; a treasure hunt through the Museum galleries; performances by Creativity in Motion, a children’s dance program, and Wassalonka, an African dance troupe; and the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art (UMOCA) Art Truck, where children can experience and learn about the work of artist Carlos Rosales-Silva.
Artful Afternoon is the Museum’s twice-yearly family art celebration, one of many educational programs meant to enrich the lives of children and adults. This summer’s program is inspired by the hands-on Drawing Lab exhibition on view at the UMFA through August 25. In Drawing Lab, visitors make the artwork themselves at five interactive drawing stations. The exhibition includes I See the Fish, Finally, a collaborative, experimental wall drawing created by eight students from the University of Utah art department during a three-day “marathon.” (A time-lapse video of the drawing marathon is available for viewing athttp://bit.ly/11dr3EY.)
The Museum, located on the South Campus of the University of Utah, is easily accessible by car from Foothill Drive—free and paid parking is available adjacent to the Museum—and by Trax. The UMFA is located only a short walk northwest of the South Campus Drive stop on the University (red) line. For more information, please visit http://umfa.utah.edu/artfulafternoon.
Artful Afternoon’s “Oodles of Doodles” program is funded in part by Salt Lake County Zoo, Arts and Parks Program (ZAP) with additional support from eBay.
