FROM BROADWAY TO HAVANA, DEER VALLEY® MUSIC
FESTIVAL PRESENTS A “WICKED” THIRD WEEK WITH “WICKED DIVAS” AND ARTURO SANDOVAL
SALT LAKE CITY—The tenth anniversary Deer Valley® Music Festival continues into its third week with a combination of two show-stopping productions. Broadway stars will steal the show in “Bravo Broadway: The Wicked Divas” on Friday, July 12, and trumpeter Arturo Sandoval will blow the audience away when he performs Latin, jazz and classical music alongside the Utah Symphony on Saturday, July 13.
Being wicked isn’t
always a bad thing, especially when it comes to these divas. In “Bravo Broadway: The Wicked Divas,” Broadway hits will be
sung by Broadway divas Emily Rozek and Nicole Parker, both of whom starred in the Broadway production
of “Wicked” as the main characters. The performance will also include classics
from musicals such as “Phantom of the Opera,” “My Fair Lady” and
“Chicago.”
The next night will
provide a sharp contrast when Arturo Sandoval, one of the most dynamic and vivacious live
performers of our time, takes the stage to perform unmatched Cuban rhythms with
the Utah Symphony. Sandoval is a Grammy-winning trumpeter who can play Latin, jazz and classical music with unparalleled
talent. This program will include tributes to his mentor, jazz legend Dizzy
Gillespie, as well as selections of Sandoval’s own music.
Principal Pops Conductor
Jerry Steichen will lead the Utah Symphony and guest artists in these memorable
performances in Park City at the Deer Valley® Snow Park Outdoor Amphitheater.
“Bravo Broadway: The Wicked Divas” will be performed on Friday, July 12,
2013 at 7:30 p.m., and Arturo Sandoval will perform with the Utah Symphony on
Saturday, July 13, 2013 at 7:30 p.m.
Repertoire
The Tony Award-winning
show “Wicked” is one of the most well-known musicals of our time, and it
continues to climb in popularity. It has won over 42 awards, including Grammy
and Tony awards, over the years. The feud and friendship between the main
characters, Glinda and Elphaba, is illustrated in the latter half of the
program, which ends with a touching duet, “For Good.” This song will be
featured in the July 12 concert “Bravo Broadway: The Wicked Divas” along with
other selections from the musical including “Popular” and “Defying Gravity.”
The concert will also feature other popular hits from musical theatre including
favorites from “Phantom of the Opera,” “Funny Girl,” “My Fair Lady,” “Chicago,”
“Ragtime” and “Spamalot” as well as several symphonic selections from George
Bizet’s opera “Carmen” and the overture to “Gypsy.”
The July 13 Utah Symphony performance with Arturo Sandoval
will include several tributes to Dizzy Gillespie, legendary jazz master and
pioneer, including “Groovin’ High,” “A Night in Tunisia” and “Burks Works.” The
second half of the program will feature Arturo Sandoval’s own work including,
“Surena,” “Dear Diz (Every Day I Think of You)” and “A Mis Abuelos.”

Artists
Maestro Jerry Steichen has established himself as one of America’s most versatile
conductors. He currently holds the positions of Principal Pops Conductor of the
Utah Symphony and Music Director of the Ridgefield Symphony (Connecticut). He
also completed sixteen seasons as Principal Pops Conductor of the New Haven
Symphony Orchestra. Steichen is the only conductor to have conducted each of
the ten seasons of the Deer Valley® Music Festival.
The versatile actress Nicole Parker is probably
best known for the role of the “wicked” witch Elphaba in the hit Broadway
production of “Wicked.” She has also performed other musical theatre roles
including Rosemary in “How to Succeed in Business without Really
Trying” and Juliet in “The Second City's Romeo and Juliet Musical.”
She is currently reprising her role as Elphaba in the touring version of
“Wicked.” In addition to her impressive resume on Broadway, she is also a
comedienne as well as being a stage actress. For six years, Parker was a cast
member and contributing writer on Fox's “MADtv.”
After her graduation
from the Boston Conservatory, seasoned musical theatre veteran Emily Rozek made her professional debut as the principle role of Winnie Tate
in “Annie Get Your Gun” starring Bernadette Peters. She has performed in
various other musicals including as the understudy of Millie Dillmount and Miss
Dorothy Brown in Broadway’s “Thoroughly Modern Millie,” Bloody Mary in “South
Pacific” and Maggie in “A Chorus Line.” Most recently, Rozek appeared as Glinda
in the Broadway production of “Wicked.”
Arturo Sandoval got his start when he began to play in the band
in his village as a child. After his classical trumpet training at the Cuban
National School of Arts he went on to be one of the founding members of
Irakere, a band specializing in Cuban music. His masterful talent and
incredible performance quality have allowed him to perform and record with
diverse artists such as Gloria Estefan, Justin Timberlake, Tony Bennett, Frank
Sinatra and Alicia Keys. He also enjoys a prolific solo career for which he has
been awarded nine Grammy Awards, six Billboard Awards and one Emmy Award.
