NEWS: Photographs Welcome for “This Is the Place” Exhibition

Photographs Welcome for “This Is the Place” Exhibition
SALT LAKE CITY — Utah Arts & Museums is seeking photographs from the public for our upcoming exhibition, “This Is the Place.” The deadline for submissions is August 1, 2013. The exhibition runs August 16 – September 13, 2013 at the Rio Gallery inside the Rio Grande Depot (300 South Rio Grande Street) in Salt Lake City. There will be a public reception on Friday, August 16 from 6 to 9 p.m. in collaboration with the Salt Lake Gallery Stroll.
Standing at the mouth of Emigration Canyon on July 24, 1847, Brigham Young is said to have declared, “This is the place.” And in the words of author Joan Didion, “A place belongs forever to whoever claims it hardest, remembers it most obsessively, wrenches it from itself, shapes it, renders it, loves it so radically that he remakes it in his own image.”
We invite all who have been influenced by Utah to send us a picture or short video of a favorite place or memorable moment in Utah. If you feel any tie to the landscape or have been touched by the remarkable surroundings in our state, we ask that you share it with us. Show us your favorite rocks to climb on, the restaurant where you met your wife, the park where you learned how to ride your bike. Take a picture of the place that comes immediately to mind when you speak of Utah. Those who submit their photos/videos will be able to see their work in a digital slideshow that will play in the gallery.
“As a culture, we often forget to heed our ties to the land,” noted Utah Arts & Museums Director Lynnette Hiskey. “It’s important to consider the effect that place has on us. Just as we shape the landscape around us, the landscape shapes each of us.”
