“Borderline” Exhibition Opens in the Rio Gallery
SALT LAKE CITY — Utah Arts & Museums announces the opening of the exhibition “Borderline” in the Rio Gallery, located in the historic Rio Grande Depot at 300 S. Rio Grande Street, Salt Lake City. The show runs from December 6, 2013 to January 10, 2014. Gallery hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. The gallery is also open every other Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. beginning December 7. An opening reception will be held on December 6 from 6 to 9 p.m. for Salt Lake Gallery Stroll.
“Borderline” looks at the ways we perceive boundaries between public and private worlds. This exhibition features the work of three artists working in different media. Painter Chuck Landvatter’s portraits expose a private glimpse of everyday people. He combines his background in the schools of tradition and low-brow aerosol to form his unique painting style. Megan Mitchell makes ceramic objects based on forms from architecture and furniture. The imagery on the pieces references both landscapes and domestic spaces, serving as a metaphor for the interactions and boundaries between inner and outer worlds. Joe Strickland uses photography to explore the unappreciated beauty of seemingly mundane private spaces. By giving a renewed vision of the true aesthetics of space, the viewer is able to recognize that which is so often overlooked.
Landvatter, Strickland and Mitchell have chosen to exhibit their work together because of their interest in the similarities and differences in their work and the conversations sparked by their individual bodies of work. All three artists are working within a traditional medium, but with a contemporary intent.
“Despite three disparate choices in media,” said Utah Arts & Museums Director Lynnette Hiskey, “a distinctive and interesting visual language emerges from these three artists in which geometry, pattern, and color fuse the artists’ visions in a delightful way.”
