GIG: Emerging Composers @ Utah Symphony's Deer Valley® Music Festival (Deadline: Jan 3)

2014 SUMMER OPPORTUNITY FOR YOUNG COMPOSERS
Emerging Quartets & Composers Program
Deer Valley® Music Festival

What: Two young (under 35) composers are selected each summer to participate in the Deer Valley® Music Festival Emerging Quartets
& Composers program. In 2014, one of the composer positions
will be reserved for an applicant currently living in Utah. During
the seminar, two elite young string quartets and two exceptional young composers work with established counterparts: the Muir Quartet and world-renowned composer Joan Tower.

When: Composers participate in the program from July 22-31, 2014; the DVMF concert on July 31st will include world premiere performances of one work for string quartet by each composer. Composers must be able to stay in Park City and commit totally to the program during the specified period.

Activities: The two EQ&C composers work with Joan Tower and attend mentoring sessions, a string quartet masterclass, rehearsals with a quartet in the process of learning and polishing the composers’ original compositions. The chosen composers will each give a talk about their music to other members of the program and invited guests. At the end of the program, they enjoy world premieres of their pieces at a Deer Valley® Music Festival concert in St. Mary’s Church.

Benefits: There is no fee for applying for or participating in this program; neither is there a stipend.  Benefits for composers include increased experience with the string quartet world, 10 days spent with both aspiring and established musicians, personal mentoring by Joan Tower, and the opportunity to have a world premiere of their own string quartet music.

Housing is provided. Composers accepted for the program will be reimbursed for up to $650 for travel costs.

Compositions: String quartet compositions must be completed, and parts made available to the quartets, by June 1, 2014. Composition length should be approximately 10 minutes.

To apply: Interested composers under the age of 35 should email the following materials
to pfowler@usuo.org:
mp3’s of two favorite compositions (not necessarily string quartet compositions)
one PDF of a score
a bio/resume

If you have questions, inquire via email or call 801-869-9090.
Application deadline is Friday, January 3, 2014, 3 PM MST.
All application materials will be sent to Joan Tower for consideration.
