timbre is an exhibition of new work by Cara Despain. Centered around a stop-motion animation she created for the show, timbre represents her ongoing investigation of drawing, contradictory materials, loneliness, and passive tension through several media. In addition to the animation, the exhibition will include preliminary storyboard drawings and a live sonic component (opening night only) that will serve as a live soundtrack for the video.
Aesthetically related to her drawings, the tiny set for the animation is comprised of mini-sculptures made from clay, wood, and concrete. It creates a quiet tone for the strange, dreamlike and subtle actions. The sonic component will emulate this, and will use the raw material of sound in the space: viewers, voices, and ambient noise. It will be collected, distorted, and played back instantly; making a surreal and audibly mirrored environment. With this, Despain aims to alter the recognizable, and reveal that materials/sounds/objects/
real time/intentions may exist inversely.
