Salt Lake City Public Library System Receives Prestigious Five-Star Designation
Award based on use of Library services, programs

November 29, 2011 – SALT LAKE CITY – The City Library today announced that it has been awarded a five-star designation by Library Journal, a leading publication in the library industry. The Salt Lake City Public Library System was ranked fifth in its expenditure class and is the only library system in Utah to be given the five-star designation.

Over 7,500 public libraries are ranked and recognized by Library Journal annually, indexed by circulation, visits, program attendance and public Internet terminal uses per capita. The City Library boasts nearly double the national average in circulation (20.4 per capita) and visits (20 per capita).

“This award recognizes how highly our community values The City Library’s services and how talented and responsive our staff is to the community’s needs,” said Kevin Werner, president of The Salt Lake City Public Library Board of Directors. “We look forward to continuing to build on this success in the future and are pleased to celebrate this award with our staff, community and partners.”

Other libraries in Utah receiving a star designation include Milford Public Library (four star); Mt. Pleasant Public Library (four star); Grand County Public Library, Moab (three star); and Lewiston Public Library (three star).

“The fact that Utah has five public libraries among the top 262 libraries ranked with five, four, or three stars is a credit to the quality of service Utah public libraries provide,” State Librarian Donna Jones Morris stated.  “In 2010, 18.5 million people visited their Utah public libraries.  Utahans are finding what they need or they wouldn’t come back and utilize libraries services in such large numbers.”

Morris further stated, “The taxpayers that support these essential community anchor institutions are to be commended.”
