Utah Lawyers for the Arts Art and the Law series begins March 24, 2012

SALT LAKE CITY, UT  The Utah Museum of Contemporary Art and Utah Lawyers for the Arts present the second Art and the Law series at UMOCA, starting March 24 with Music and the Law, followed by Publishing on April 14 and Documentaries on May 26. 

“We are very happy to welcome Utah Lawyer for the Arts back to our building,” says Adam Price, executive director, Utah Museum of Contemporary Art. “They are providing an invaluable service by helping artists understand what their rights are, how to avoid the most common legal pitfalls and the best ways to advance their careers in a knowledgeable manner.”

Music and the Law
March 24, 1-4 p.m.
Presented by Thomas Leavens, Esq. of Leavens, Strand, Glover & Adler, LLC
Learn what you need to know to succeed in the business of music by protecting your rights and understanding industry practices and terms, including how publishing works, how to negotiate recording, agency, performance, distribution, licensing and management agreements and how to make the most of new technologies and business models.

April 14, 1-4 p.m.
Presented by Nicholas Wells, Esq. of Wells IP Law
Brush up on the fundamentals of publishing, including common steps in the publication process, the application of copyright law to printed and online materials, entering into publishing contracts, electronic rights issues, avoiding liability and promoting your work. 

May 26, 1-4 p.m.
Presented by William Evans, Esq. of Parsons Behle & Latimer
Get the inside scoop on legal issues you may encounter in producing documentary films, including relevant considerations in organizing a production entity, fundamental models of financing for independent films, copyrights and clearances, fair use, basic personnel contracts and concepts of privacy, publicity and defamation.
