The University of Utah’s Departments of Modern Dance and Film
& Media Arts are pleased to announce the 9th International
Screendance Festival. The Festival spans three evenings
with different films screened each night.
June 23 – International Student Films
(Marriott Center for Dance)
In conjunction with the Screendance Editing Workshop with Simon
Fildes, the students of the University of Utah's Departments of Modern Dance
and Film & Media Arts will present an evening of student works chosen from
submissions from around the world. Selected by a jury of professionals and
students, this evening provides young filmmakers and choreographers with a
venue for their work, as well as providing audiences with a glimpse of the art
forms’ exciting future. Films from Rwanda, Thailand, South Africa, the United
Kingdom and the US will be screened.
June 24 - An Evening of
Films by Simon Fildes and Katrina McPherson including World Premiere (The Post
Theater)
Award-winning artists Simon Fildes and Katrina McPherson have
been creating screendances for over 20 years. We are excited to present
the world premiere of their most recent film, “The Time it Takes.” Shot
on location on the stunning west coast of South Uist, it features dance artists
Simon Ellis (NZ/UK) Dai Jian (China/USA) and Rosalind Masson (Scotland/Germany).
Also included in this evening will be their award winning film Moment. Having
received the best screen choreography award at IMZ’s International Dance Screen
in 2000, the jury citation was “For poetic simplicity in which the structure of
the choreography is revealed through the skillful editing”. Also
included in the program will be There is a Place, which was
selected as the Best Festival Short at Dance Camera West in Los Angeles in
2011. Mr. Fildes will be present to introduce and comment on all films.
June 28 – An Evening of
European Dance Film Curated by Simon Fildes (The Marriott Center for
Dance)
This evening of both classic and contemporary European dance
film comes from renowned choreographers and directors including Jonathon Burrows/Adam
Roberts, Simon Ellis, Becky Edmunds, Magali Charrier, Lucy Cash, Joelle
Bouvier, Wim Vankerkeybus/Walter Verdin, Dunja Jocic/ Marinus Groothof. Mr.
Fildes will be present to discuss the films.
All screenings begin at 7:30 PM. Tickets are
available at the door and are $7.00 for the general public, $5 for students
with ID, and University of Utah students are free with U of U

Simon Fildes’
weeklong teaching residency is made possible by a grant from The University
Teaching Committee. There are still spaces available in the
workshop! The student screening is made possible by a grant from the
College of Fine Arts’ Fine Arts Fee Committee.
