SUU’S ART INSIGHTS TO FEATURE
PHOTOGRAPHER DAN ESTABROOK
JANUARY 26, 2012

Southern Utah University, Cedar City, Utah: Calculated and mesmerizing are two words that describe the images created by photographer, Dan Estabrook. For over twenty years he has been making contemporary art using a variety of 19th-century photographic techniques. He will be sharing his work and techniques in SUU’s Department of Art and Design’s weekly lecture series, Art Insights, on Thursday, January 26, 2012. The lecture begins at 7pm at The Great Hall in the Hunter Conference Center admission is free and the general public is encouraged to attend.

Recently, Dan Estabrook has focused on the earliest paper photographs – calotype negatives and salted paper prints – as sources for hand manipulation with paint and pencil. His body of work, not only shows his clear artistic vision, but also his intelligence of composition and his medium. The time commitment given to each image is extensive and precise, therefore unparalleled work. Dan has exhibited widely and has received several awards, including an Artist’s Fellowship from the National Endowment of the Arts in 1994. He is also the subject of a recent documentary by Anthropy Arts. He is represented by the Catherine Edelman Gallery in Chicago, Daniel Cooney Fine Art in New York and Jackson Fine Art in Atlanta. He lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.

Art Insights is a weekly program hosted during the fall and spring semesters by SUU’s Art and Design faculty. Students and community members meet weekly to experience presentations and discussions by visiting artists and art educators from around the nation who share their work and insights and attend gallery openings. Admission is free, and the general public is invited to attend.

Learn more about Dan Estabrook’s special artistic style and subject by attending his Art Insights’ appearance. For more information on the SUU College of Performing and Visual Arts events, please call the Arts Hotline at (435) 865-8800, or visit www.suu.edu/arts.
