Roots and Branches of Jazz: African and Eastern Influence
(Orem Public Library: October 26, 7pm)
Contact: Eliot Wilcox 801-229-7174
The roots of Jazz music extend back to King David and the Persian and Babylonian empires. The styles and instruments of those periods influenced the music of Africa, rhythms that eventually found their way to New Orleans.
Join the BYU Jazz Legacy ensemble, Dr. Steven Call, Dr. Ray Smith, Dr. Jeremy Grimshaw, and Dr. Lloyd Miller as they explore the cosmopolitan roots of jazz through discussions and demonstrations. Listen to live jazz and gain a new sense of appreciation for the heritage of this remarkable music.
This program has received funding from the Utah Humanities Council and the Utah Arts Council. The Utah Humanities Council promotes understanding of diverse traditions, values, and ideas through informed public discussion.
Admission is free. Please visit oremlibrary.org for more information.
