SUU's Braithwaite Fine Arts Gallery Presents
The 6-Inch Art Show
May 12-22 2012
Southern Utah University, Cedar City, Utah: When SUU Art Education students travel into Iron County schools, their enthusiasm inspires youngsters
to create a color retrospective inspired by local life. These young
artists’ creativity will be showcased in the Braithwaite Fine Arts
Gallery in The 6-Inch Art Show which runs May 12-22, 2012. The gallery hours are Tuesday-Saturday, noon to 7pm. Admission is free and the public is encouraged to attend.
With funding provided by the Friends of the Braithwaite Fine Arts Gallery, AT&T Foundation, Utah Division of Arts & Museums and Cedar City Recreation Arts Parks, the Art Education students were able to create an outreach program drawing its inspiration the fall 2011 exhibition, Soviet Era Art: 1917-1991 on
loan from the Springville Museum of Art. Using the exhibition’s
perspective of everyday life in Russia, the Iron County students were
given 6-inch squares of paper and were encouraged to depict everyday
life in the county. The students’ finished art has been collected and
will be featured in the Braithwaite Fine Arts Gallery show.
For the 6-Inch Art Show,
the Art Education program reached thousands of children and young
adults in the Iron County area. Five undergraduate students attending
Southern Utah University taught the classes in the program. These
students were Whitney Staheli, Kristi Schmidt, Carly Coles, Lonnie Horlacher and Ryan Horlacher.
These five teachers reached 3,035 students in Iron County School
classrooms. Classes taught in the Braithwaite Fine Arts Gallery reached
2,070 students, for a grand total of 5,015. Students of all ages and
grade levels were involved in this year's education program.
Experience the creativity of children from the community by attending the 6-Inch Art Show. For more information about this exhibit, visit www.suu.edu/pva/artgallery or call (435) 586-5432.
