Pygmalion Theatre
Company presents In the Next Room (or The
Vibrator Play)
Salt Lake City,
Utah - April 16, 2012 Pygmalion Theatre Company presents the Salt Lake City
premiere of "In the Next Room (or The Vibrator Play)" by Sarah Ruhl, May 3 -
May 20, 2012, at the Rose Wagner Theatre.
Nominated for
three Tony Awards, "In the Next Room" is laugh out loud funny, provocative, and
touching. The play is set in
Victorian New York just as electricity is spreading its warm glow into the home
of Dr. and Mrs. Givings. When the
good doctor adopts the cutting-edge treatment for hysteria--electro-mechanical
stimulation--the therapeutic "paroxysms" produced prompt his patients to
explore deeper issues. Rejuvenated by the treatment´s therapeutic effects, his
female patients begin to seek redemption in the renewal of their own fading
marital fires. Rather than being
an elaborate sex joke, "In the Next Room" illuminates the loneliness,
frustration, and absence of understanding between women and the men who both make
the rules and fear female sexuality.
"Insightful,
fresh and funny, the play is as rich in thought as it is in feeling...one of
the most gifted and adventurous American playwrights to emerge in recent
years...In the Next Room is a true novelty: a sex comedy designed not for
sniggering teenage boys - or grown men who wish they were still sniggering
teenage boys - but for adults with open hearts and minds." -The New York
Times
Physicians since
Hippocrates labeled symptoms such as insomnia, faintness, and
irritability "hysteria," but the catalog of symptoms was so broad in the late
17th century, it could cover nearly any ailment, as well as the
common differences between women and men.
"In the Next Room" playwright, Sarah Ruhl, was intrigued to learn that before
doctors treated "hysterical" women with vibrators, they had to perform the
arduous task manually. They
welcomed the vibrator as a time- and labor-saving device.
"In
the Next Room, (or the vibrator play)" has a ton of laughs, surprising
twists and turns, rich characters, and above all, great heart. Directed by Fran Pruyn, the cast
includes; Mrs. Givings - Cassandra Stokes-Wylie, Dr. Givings - Joe Crnich, Mrs.
Daldry - Holly Fowers, Mr. Daldry - Michael Canham, Annie - Teresa Sanderson, Elizabeth
- Michelle Patrick, Leo - Jonathan McBride.
All shows at the
Rose Wagner Center for the Arts - 138 W. Broadway. Tickets are available
through ArtTix at 801-355-ARTS.
