Statewide Annual Visual Arts Competition Call for Entries
Artworks in Mixed Media & Works on Paper Are Eligible
SALT LAKE CITY — Utah Arts & Museums announces the call for submissions to the “Utah 2013: Mixed Media & Works on Paper” competition and exhibition. Submissions for this annual statewide competition will be received at the Rio Gallery at the Rio Grande Depot (300 S. Rio Grande Street, Salt Lake City, UT 84101) on Thursday and Friday, September 19 and 20, 2013 from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Digital submissions are available for artists who live a great distance from the gallery or who are submitting large works that are difficult to transport.
“The Statewide Annual theme rotates each year between mixed media and works on paper; craft and photography; and painting and sculpture,” noted Utah Arts & Museums Director Lynnette Hiskey. “It’s a terrific opportunity for artists to gain exposure for their work.”
All artists age 18 and older working in mixed media and works on paper are encouraged to apply. "Mixed media" works consist of any two- or three-dimensional work where two or more media are used. "Works on paper" refers to printmaking, drawing, and pastel on paper. Please note that traditional photography on paper should be submitted to the "Craft & Photography" competition, and paintings on paper should be submitted to the "Painting & Sculpture" competition.
The artwork will be juried by two esteemed arts professionals: Lisa Tamiris Becker of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Simon Zalkind of Denver, Colorado. Those juried into the exhibition will have their work on display at the Rio Gallery from October 18 – November 22, 2013. The jurors will award six artists who show excellence in their media with $500. All inquiries concerning the competition and exhibition should be made to Visual Arts Manager Laura Durham, 801.245.7270 or ldurham@utah.gov. Artists must register online to participate in the exhibition. The registration form, full bios of the jurors, and other information can be found at www.statewideannual.org.
