Dr. Herb has selected a festive program from across big band and jazz vocals canons. The evening will include Eric Richard’s “Southeast Sixstep,” “All of Me” as performed by Count Basie’s Orchestra (Originally composed by Gerald Marks and Seymour Simons.), “Sweet and Slow” as performed by the Gerry Mulligan Concert Jazz Band (Original composition by Harry Warren and Al Dubin), Jimmy Van Heusen and Sammy Cahn’s “Come Fly With Me” (popularized by Frank Sinatra), John Lennon and Paul McCartney’s “Norwegian Wood” as recorded by the Buddy Rich Big Band, “I’ve Told Ev’ry Little Star” by Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II, Gordon Goodwin’s “A Few Good Men” (as recorded by Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band), and “A-Tisket, A-Tasket” (as recorded by Ella Fitzgerald and the Chick Webb Orchestra in 1938).

Dr. Thomas Herb is an instrumental music education specialist with two decades of experience. His background includes ten years as a middle school/high school band director, as well as ten years of directing college ensembles. Dr. Herb is a published author of music education books, including his Teaching Improvisation ... in Concert Band?!?; and is published in multiple volumes of the Teaching Music Through Performance In Band series. As an active and well-rounded saxophonist, Dr. Herb performs equally well in classical and jazz idioms. He is a co-founder of the SUU Faculty Jazz Group called Kind Of Blue. His classical saxophone skills have won membership in two AFM organizations (California Wind Orchestra and Quincy Park Band) and several notable orchestral performances, including solos and section work with the Quincy Symphony and the Orchestra of Southern Utah. Dr. Herb has also performed regularly with the Mississippi Valley Saxophone Quartet, the Illinois Missouri Swing Machine, Ben Bumbry and the Messengers, and the Bullis Rutter Big Band. A further list of performances includes the Quincy Sunday Music Series, SUU Faculty Recitals, Bon Appétit Recitals and the Consumnes River Jazz Band.

The SUU Jazz Band is earning its reputation as a top notch jazz ensemble. Under the direction of Dr. Thomas Herb, an impressive list of notable jazz artists have worked with and performed with the group. This list includes trumpeter Wayne Bergeron, saxophonists Bob Shepperd and Pete Christlieb, and rhythm section members Reggie Thomas, Rodney Whitaker, and Dennis Mackrel. In February of 2014, the SUU Jazz Band welcomes trombonist Delfeayo Marsalis to the stage for another awesome night of music.
