SALT LAKE CITY - Utah Arts & Museums announces
the opening of the exhibition "There Must Be Black" in the Alice Gallery,
located inside the Glendinning Mansion. The show runs from November 15, 2013 to
January 3, 2014. Gallery hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. The
Glendinning Mansion is located at 617 E. South Temple in Salt Lake City. An
opening reception will be held on November 15 from 6 to 9 p.m. in conjunction
with Salt Lake Gallery Stroll.
This exhibition consists of new drawings and mixed-media
works by Catherine Downing, Nancy Steele-Makasci and Tawni Shuler. The pieces
in this exhibition are intended to reveal "black" in all its variety, from
dense, rich, impenetrable blacks to smoky, hazy, delicate grays. Even though
black is often interpreted in a negative sense referring to death, evil or
destruction, in this exhibition, powerful and intense black will be a place of
solace and rest in a sometimes tumultuous and transitory world. Black then
becomes a metaphor for a certain kind of experience in the world.
The artists state, "No matter what we do or whom we
meet, we all leave behind an imprint. This imprint leaves a faint impression in
each of us - emotionally, physically or spiritually - long after we are done.
Black and its values can function in this way: a residue of something past, a
memory in a lost shadow."
"The range of emotion, quality of line and mark-making
in this exhibition truly communicate the breadth of the metaphor that the
artists have intended," said Lynnette Hiskey, Director of Utah Arts &
Museums.
The Rio and Alice galleries were created as a
service to Utah artists. They provide free venues for emerging and established
artists to collaborate on exhibits and engage the community through art-making
and dialogue. For more information on exhibition and other program
