A double bill, both one-act operas will be presented on the same night
Utah Opera presents Puccini’s Suor Angelica and Gianni Schicchi at Capitol Theatre on May 15, 17, 19 and 21 at 7:30 pm and March 23 at 2:00 pm. The Utah Symphony will accompany Utah Opera in each performance, conducted by Chorus Master Susanne Sheston and directed by Kathleen Smith Belcher (Utah Opera debut). The operas will be sung in Italian with English supertitiles.
The evening begins with Puccini’s heart-wrenching tale of Suor Angelica, which follows the events that occur after Suor Angelica learns about the death of her illegitimate child. Ending with the power of redemption, the opera features soaring melodies and gripping vocal lines. Just the opposite of tragedy, the story of Gianni Schicchi will delight the audience as a greedy family tries to change the will of their relative only to find themselves outsmarted by Mr. Schicchi (Michael Wanko).
There will be one twenty minute intermission between the operas. Approximate final curtain times will be 10:20 pm for evening performances and 4:40 pm for the matinee.
A free Opera Preview Lecture will be presented by Paul Dorgan (Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts) on Wednesday, May 12 at 7:00 pm in the 4th floor meeting room of the Salt Lake City Library.
There will also be a Questions and Answers session with Utah Opera Artistic Director, Christopher McBeth immediately following each performance in the Founders room on the mezzanine level at Capitol Theatre.
