WORKING ARTISTS LECTURE SERIES: San Francisco-based artist Michael Light
Tuesday, May 4, 7 PM
Michael Light is a San Francisco photographer whose work has been exhibited internationally, with images in the permanent collections of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, The Los Angeles County Museum of Art and The New York Public Library, among others. In 2007, Light received a Guggenheim Fellowship to create an aerial survey of the intermountain West, exploring themes of mapping, vertigo, human impact on the land, and the significance of geologic time and its relation to the sublime. The results are visible in his new book, a nuanced exploration of two Salt Lake-area landmarks, the Bingham Canyon mine and the Garfield smelter stack. Light appears as the fourth in a series of discussions with working artists meant to provide inspiration for Utah's contemporary arts community.
