On Saturday September 11 the newly formed Chamber Orchestra Ogden will present its first concert. The concert will be played at 11:00 a.m. at the Ogden Farmers’ Market on Historic 25th Street.
Michael Palumbo, Director of Orchestral Studies at Weber State University, in response to numerous requests from many of his former students and other highly talented musicians in Ogden and the surrounding communities, formed Chamber Orchestra Ogden this fall.
According to Palumbo, the orchestra “will address the need for an orchestra in this part of Utah where outstanding musicians will be able to rehearse and perform on a professional level. Each concert is prepared with just three rehearsals, so the caliber of the players must be extremely high.” Three concerts are planned for this inaugural season. The dates and venues of the next two concerts will be announced at a later time.
Although the orchestra is currently rehearsing at WSU Palumbo is looking toward a partnership with the city of Ogden, with the intent of being able to rehearse and present concerts in a regular venue in the city. In an interview Palumbo said, “I think that a sponsorship by Ogden City would be beneficial to all parties concerned. Very few cities the size of Ogden can boast of having a professional level orchestra. The cost to the city would be minimal, and the rewards great.”
This first concert will be performed by a core group of string players, and will feature Mark Maxson, guitar. Auditions will be held later this fall for additional string players, plus winds, brass and percussion. All auditionees must be capable of performing at a very high level of proficiency. Audition dates will be announced shortly. Anyone with questions about membership is invited to contact Palumbo at 801-626-6991 or mpalumbo@weber.edu
