Call for Memories and Memorabilia - Library Square June 21 - June 24

Collaborate on Festival History
Call for Memories and Memorabilia

Salt Lake City, UT:  Just as the Utah Arts Festival is to open its gates for the 36th time, the J. Willard Marriott Library released a short documentary detailing the Utah Arts Festival archival project. Shot during last year’s 35th anniversary, the video illustrates the collaboration spearheaded by Festival Director Lisa Sewell and Marriott Library Digital Collections Specialist Erika Church.
“The Utah Arts Festival is something that everybody experiences differently…Our mission was to evoke and remind everyone of their experiences,” says Krissy Giacoletto, Assistant Photograph Archivist, in the 5 minute video. (See video link above.)
Archivists have taken 35 years worth of documents, photographs, guides, maps and artifacts and catalogued the Festival from its humble beginnings in 1977. Hundreds of boxes have moved from Festival storage to the library where the public can now have access.
“These artifacts preserve and highlight the talent and dedication of artists and patrons throughout Utah,” says Greg Hatch, Head of Fine Arts and Architecture Library.
“We are thrilled that the Marriott Library has made a commitment to preserve this important and ongoing piece of Utah’s history,” says Sewell. “I hope that people who have participated in or attended the Festival will add to the collection as well as be reminded of the joy the Festival brings each June.”
Sewell and archivists at the Marriott Library invite those who have a memory or who can help identify photos to step forward and add to the collection.
The public can visit the archives at the Marriott Library, 295 South 1500 East on the University of Utah Campus.
The 2012 Utah Arts Festival runs Thursday, June 21 through Sunday, June 24 from noon to 11 pm on Library Square, 400 South and 200 East in downtown Salt Lake City.
Adult admission is $10 at the gate, $7 in advance. Children 12 and under are free. Seniors 65 and above are $5. Reduced adult admission is $5 and available from noon to 3 p.m. on Thursday and Friday.
