DesignArts Utah ’12 Exhibition Opens in Rio Gallery

SALT LAKE CITY — Utah Arts & Museums’ Design Arts Program announces DesignArts Utah ’12, an exhibition celebrating Utah design. The show will open June 15 and run through July 27, 2012, at the Rio Gallery, 300 S. Rio Grande (455 West) in Salt Lake City. Gallery hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. A public reception will be held on June 15 from 6 to 9 p.m. in conjunction with the Salt Lake Gallery Stroll.

DesignArts Utah exhibitions, curated annually by the Design Arts Program of Utah Arts & Museums, feature a selection of designs, prototypes and produced samples by some of the best of Utah’s various designers and fields. The juror for 2012, David Revere McFadden of New York City, reviewed 55 projects submitted by 28 Utah designers. Eleven projects were selected from:

Jill Schwartz                                        Graphic design
David Morgan/Backflip Design            Industrial/product design
Rocketship, Inc.                                  Industrial/product design
Imbue Design                                      Architecture
Modaliti                                                Industrial/product design
Creative Capsule                                Art services design
David Wolske/Red Butte Press          Graphic design
Sparano + Mooney Architecture          Architecture

The Kimball Art Center architecture project by Sparano + Mooney Architecture of Salt Lake City was selected to receive the Juror’s Design Winner Award.

“All these designs are both functional and attractive,” said Director of Utah Arts & Museums Margaret Hunt. “The proposal for the Kimball Art Center, for instance, shows an elegant solution to the design issues specific to art museums, in which both artworks and people must coexist. Kudos to all these talented designers.”

McFadden is Chief Curator and Vice President for Programs and Collections at the Museum of Arts & Design in New York City. He served as Curator of Decorative Arts and Assistant Director for Collections and Research at the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum, Smithsonian Institution, as well as serving as President of the International Council of Museums’ Decorative Arts and Design Committee.
The Design Arts Program is dedicated to the promotion of excellence in the diverse fields of design in Utah. We strive to help Utah citizens see, experience, use and value the art of design that surrounds us. More information is available at designartsutah.org or by calling 801-533-3581 or 801-533-3585.
