SUU’S BRAITHWAITE FINE ARTS GALLERY SHOWCASES
“THE PSYCHEDELIC YEARS: ROCK POSTERS & HANDBILLS FROM THE SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA, 1966-1971”
JUNE 20 – AUGUST 25, 2012

Southern Utah University, Cedar City, Utah:  Great music inspired great poster art especially in the golden age of rock music.  To celebrate the 10th anniversary of GrooveFest, southern Utah’s acclaimed music festival, Southern Utah University’s Braithwaite Fine Arts Gallery presents The Psychedelic Years: Rock Posters & Handbills from the San Francisco Bay Area, 1966-1971, in Celebration of the 10thAnniversary of GrooveFest. Showcasing the vibrant art that defined the musicians as well as the artists who mastered psychedelic art, this boldly colorful exhibition will run June 20 through August 25, 2012.The posters can be seen at the Braithwaite Fine Arts Gallery located on the lower level of the Braithwaite Building on the Southern Utah University campus. The gallery’s summer hours are Monday–Saturday, 10am–8pm. The handbills will be on exhibit in SUU’s Gerald R. Sherratt Library on the third floor, Monday-Thursday, 8am-9pm, Friday, 8am-5pm and Saturday, 10am-2pm. The library is just a short walk from the Braithwaite Fine Arts Gallery.  Admission is free, and the general public is encouraged to attend.

Featuring a series of vintage posters and handbills by the premiere graphic artists of the era, The Psychedelic Years spotlights the posters for the concerts produced by the legendary Bill Graham and Chet Helms of Family Dog Productions at San Francisco’s historic rock palaces: the Fillmore Auditorium, Fillmore West and the Avalon Ballroom. Artists represented included posters by Lee Conklin, Wes Wilson, David Singer and Randy Tuten. The bands and musicians captured by these artists include the Steve Miller Band, Grateful Dead, Quicksilver, The Byrds, Sly and the Family Stone, The Doors, Jefferson Airplane, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young and many others. This colorful collection of posters and handbills is more than nostalgic – it captures an era of music that remains timeless and classic.

The Psychedelic Years: Rock Posters & Handbills from the San Francisco Bay Area, 1966-1971, in Celebration of the 10th Anniversary of GrooveFest will run concurrently with other exhibitions scheduled for summer 2012. At the Braithwaite, the larger gallery will feature the Southern Utah Art Invitational Summer Exhibit and Sale. Showcasing the art and artists of Cedar City and the Southern Utah region, this vibrant exhibition will run June 20 through August 25, 2012. The gallery’s summer hours are Monday–Saturday, 10am–8pm. Admission is free, and the general public is encouraged to attend.

Stunning vistas from the Dixie National Forest are showcased in another SUU exhibition. Into the Woods: A Painted Diary of the Dixie National Forest by Arlene Braithwaite features 20 extraordinary canvases by the acclaimed regional artist. The show continues through Saturday, August 25, 2012. The exhibit’s hours are Monday through Friday, 10:00am-5:00pm, except holidays and special events in the Conference Center. Admission is free and the general public is encouraged to attend.

ABOUT THE COLLEGE
The Southern Utah University College of Performing and Visual Arts is comprised of nationally accredited departments of Art and Design, Music, Theatre Arts and Dance, as well as a graduate program in Arts Administration.
