SALT LAKE CITY, UT – From So You Think You Can Dance to Breaking Pointe, and America's Got Talent,
the summer dance season is well underway. If watching these shows has
you "itching" to dance, Repertory Dance Theatre (RDT) has you covered! RDT presents the first ever "Summer Sampler Series." In addition to regularly scheduled, year-round classes for adults (ages 16+), the school will offer 4 "mini sessions" on Saturday afternoons this summer. Classes, including Hip Hop, Modern, Contemporary Jazz, and Ballroom, are taught by RDT company members. The series offers classes that are not currently on the regular schedule in a fun, non-threatening environment for all skill levels. Classes are open to all levels and no committment is required. Students can "drop-in" for $10/class, sign up for each session for $25, or dance for the entire summer for just $100. News: John Spears Named Executive Director of The Salt Lake City Public Library

30, 2013 – Salt Lake City – The City Library Board of Directors named
John Spears Executive
Director of The Salt Lake City Public Library in a unanimous vote
today. The decision came after a nationwide recruitment process that
resulted in a multi-day visit with the final candidates, who met and
were interviewed by the Library Board and members of
all levels of the organization.
Spears is currently the Executive Director of the Naperville Public Library, Illinois, and has
served in various leadership and public services roles in libraries since 1998.
“Library
staff and Board members alike were inspired by John’s vision and his
leadership in
redefining the role that libraries play in their communities,” said
Kevin Werner, Library Board President. “Through collaboration and
partnerships, he has demonstrated how libraries can reach populations
not typically served by traditional library services
and embody the aspirations of their communities.”
The
library currently partners with service organizations, educators,
cultural institutions,
and experts, said Werner. “Through John’s leadership and focus, we look
forward to these partnerships expanding for the benefit of our entire
community.”
Spears
said he was impressed with the energy he felt in the city at the
library. “In meeting
with the staff and Board, I felt at home and that I had the opportunity
to be a part of something wonderful at the Salt Lake City Public
Library. With two new branches on the horizon and an incredible amount
of community involvement already in place, I’m excited
to help guide the Library into the future.”
Spears will replace Linda Hamilton, who was named Acting Director in November 2011. Hamilton
was tasked by the Library Board to address the challenges that hindered the distressed organization from moving forward.

traditional Mexican music and dance,
Aztec ritual performances, food and a ceremonial torch lighting of the Olmec
head complete with fireworks.
Activities throughout the evening will include
stemmed rose giveaways, ongoing games of the popular La Lotería (with
prizes!), paper flower making and demonstrations, bead stringing and other hands-on
children’s art activities. Piñata breaking, balloon animals and bouncy houses
will entertain children while adults compete for prizes in a mariachi
sing-along!
Imported arts and crafts from Mexico
will be for sale in the Una Mano Amiga sponsored Mercado, with funds
supporting health needs of children in Mexico. La 35 will have
delicious food for sale.
In the gallery, Artes de Mexico en Utah
will co-present the popular exhibit, Mexico Then and Now, showcasing
Mexico’s past through the legendary archive of photographs by Agustin Victor
Casasola. Mexico Now complements Mexico Then with photographs of
contemporary Mexico taken and added by Utah residents.

Applications for all funding opportunities are due
by 5 p.m. on the respective day. The
purpose of these grants is to ensure that the cultural, civic, educational and
economic benefits of the arts are accessible to every community in the state. Organizations
must have nonprofit 501(c)(3) status for all grant categories, except for: Arts
Project Grants, which also include for-profit organizations that have
collaborative community outreach; and OnStage in Utah grants, which are open to
presenters who are a unit of government, a nonprofit organization with
501(c)(3) designation, or work under a 501(c)(3) organizational umbrella or
government agent.
Arts Project Grants enable organizations and groups whose primary
mission may or may not be arts-based to develop and provide arts-based projects
to the general public. Applicants may apply for up to $2,000 for arts projects
such as festivals, exhibitions, concerts and other innovative public
presentations that advance the arts in a community or geographic region.
Capital Facility Requests are for arts organizations and museums to request
state financial assistance for capital facilities projects. Organizations apply
for prioritization of capital facilities project funding through Utah Arts
& Museums. Applications will be forwarded to the appropriate board, either
the Office of Museum Services Advisory Board or the Utah Arts Council Board of
Directors. Each board will then provide the Governor´s Office and State
Legislature a list of prioritized capital facilities projects for consideration
when the governor and legislature are constructing state budgets.
Local Arts Agency Grants provide general support to local arts agencies. Matching funds or partnerships are required.
Funding is available to officially designated local arts agencies that are
either nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations or are part of a city/county
government.
OnStage in Utah Grants support public performances and educational outreach of in-state or
out-of-state performing artists. Presenters bring touring artists to their
communities for live performance. In addition, they arrange for educational
outreach activities during an artist´s visit, such as student performances,
lecture demonstrations, master classes or workshops. A public performance as
well as an educational outreach activity is required to receive funding.
OnStage in Utah will pay up to 50% of an artist´s fee from $200 to $2,000. Utah
presenters can apply for multiple performing artists, with a maximum award of
$2,000 per presenter per year. The presenter and the proposed performance must
be located in Utah; performing artists can be from Utah or from outside of the
state.
Nonprofit Arts Organization Sustainability Grants provide funding to nonprofit arts organizations
for general operating expenses. To be
eligible, organizations must have received three years of consecutive funding
from Utah Arts & Museums. Matching funds are required.
Nonprofit Arts Organization Capacity-Building Grants provide funding to nonprofit arts organizations
for general operating expenses. The purpose of this funding is to build the
capacity of new and emerging nonprofit organizations whose primary mission is
arts-related. Capacity-Building Grants provide
support for organizations that are either in their first three years of seeking
funding from Utah Arts & Museums or that have no paid staff members. Grants of up to $2,500 are available and
matching funds are required.
Review and approval of these grants is determined
by the Utah Arts Council Board of Directors and administered by the staff of
Utah Arts & Museums. Utah Arts & Museums requires grantees to file
final reports and send thank-you letters to their Utah legislative
representatives. Applicants are
encouraged to go to artsandmuseums.utah.gov to download specific grant guidelines and

NEWS: Lynnette Hiskey Chosen as Utah’s New Arts & Museums Director
SALT LAKE CITY — Department of Heritage & Arts Executive Director Julie Fisher announced today the selection of Lynnette Hiskey to be the next Director of the Utah Division of Arts & Museums.
“Lynnette has the experience to connect with and strengthen arts, museums, and cultural organizations that are key to the local economies of many of our cities and towns in Utah,” Executive Director Fisher said. “She will also continue to foster the strong influence that arts has in our education system statewide.”
“I'm delighted to be appointed to the position of director,” Hiskey said. “I look forward to increasing the awareness of the public value of the arts and museums in education, economic development, and quality of life. Utah has a rich arts and cultural heritage. This is something we should celebrate, preserve, and continue to encourage and promote for future generations.”
The selection comes after a nationwide search for the most qualified candidate. Out of a pool of both local and national candidates, Hiskey was chosen by a search panel, which included the chairs of the Utah Arts Council and Utah Museum Services Board.
“During the hiring process we did a national search and ended up with an excellent bank of candidates,” Dr. Pam Miller, chair of the Utah Museum Services Board, said. “It speaks well for Ms. Hiskey that she stood up against a national corps of candidates and came out ahead of them.”
“As chairman of the Utah Arts Council I am thrilled with Ms. Hiskey’s appointment. She comes to this position well prepared for her duties and is well respected throughout the arts community,” John T. Nielsen said. “As board chair, I congratulate her on her appointment.”
Hiskey has served at the Division of Arts & Museums for the past nine years as assistant director for the division. Prior to that, she managed Salt Lake County’s Zoo, Arts & Parks Program. She graduated from the University of Phoenix with a Bachelor’s of Science in Business Administration.

Summer Nature Camps in June:The Ogden Nature Center is offering summer camps for age groups ranging from 2-16. Join in the summer fun and expand your nature knowledge! X-treme Eco-Expedition – ages 11-14June 10 – 14, Mon.-Weds. 8:30 am – 3:30 pm with a sleepover Thurs. from 6 pm to Friday morning at 8 am.
Think you know what it takes to survive in the wild? Challenge yourself in the ultimate nature adventure. Learn how to read nature and prepare yourself for survival using basic first aid, map reading, fire starting, leadership, tracking and shelter building skills learned along the way. Conquer the compass, and GPS and put your skills to the test in an all-out, end of camp treasure hunt. Who will win in this wild adventure?
Creepy Crawly Critters – ages 7-9June 17 – 21, Mon.-Weds. 8:30 am – 3:30 pm with a sleepover Thurs. from 6 pm to Friday morning at 8 am.
Would you like an up-close and personal encounter with the creepy crawly critters that are moving around the nature center? Dig through pond muck and search fields high and low for snakes, lizards, insects, spiders and more. Play games and enjoy activities that help us understand and appreciate the creepy crawly critters all around us.
Animal Explorers – ages 4-6June 24 – 28, Mon. – Fri., 9 am – 12 noon
We will travel to wild places around the Nature Center as we search for and explore the wonderful world of animals. Campers are sure to have a blast learning and visiting with animals that are cute and cuddly, soft and fuzzy, scaly, hairy and sometimes even a little scary.
