Merce Cunningham Intensive

June 13-24, 2011 | University of Utah - Marriott Center for Dance


Repertory Dance Theatre’s annual summer workshop for 2011 will celebrate the technique, pedagogy and philosophy of Merce Cunningham. During the two week intensive, intermediate and advanced dance students will have the opportunity to study with Cunningham master teachers, Patricia Lent and Neil Greenberg.


Merce Cunningham was a leader of the American avant-garde throughout his seventy-year career and is considered one of the most important choreographers of our time. Through much of his life, he was also one of the greatest American dancers. With an artistic career distinguished by constant innovation, Cunningham expanded the frontiers not only of dance, but also of contemporary visual and performing arts. His collaborations with artistic innovators from every creative discipline have yielded an unparalleled body of American dance, music, and visual art.

Classes
Daily, two hour Modern Technique class emphasizing the Cunningham style
Repertory class featuring sections of Merce Cunningham’s piece, Scramble, learned alongside RDT company dancers
Composition class highlighting a 1978 course taught by Merce Cunningham which focused on the inner workings of his choreographic process
Historical lectures and film showings.

Performances
Students will have the opportunity to perform sections of Scramble as well as their choreographic creations in an end of workshop formal showing on June 24, 2011. es and film showings

Tuition
$650 with scholarship opportunities available

SaltDanceFest* participants are eligible for a discount, $1200, for full participation in both workshops.
University credit is available for $40 to the University of Utah (2 credits)

*SaltDanceFest is the University of Utah's summer workshop for 2011. The workshop runs from May 31 - June 10, 2011 and features Eiko and Kome, Chris Aiken and Angie Hauser, and Teri and Oliver Steele. Fore more information, click here.


Requirements

Intermediate / Advanced dancers only with extensive dance experience
Must be at least 18 years old
Dancers must participate in all classes throughout the workshop
