Relique Americana Series
Found Object Sculpture by Jason Lanegan
Access II Gallery
Art Access Gallery is pleased to show the Relique Americana Series of artist Jason Lanegan.
Artist Jason Lanegan is the director of the Harris Gallery at BYU. His work stems his belief that in this age of technology and globalization, which focuses on people and places becoming more and more similar, we lose our uniqueness as a culture. He bases his Relique Americana Series on the premise that one of the responses to the erosion of local identity is the growth of popular collecting.
Lanegan suggests that people gather around them items that are emblematic of a happier, more certain time in order to build a bastian against the uncertainties of the future.
Lanegan explains that the Relique Americana Series, " utilizes the preexisting icons and relics of commercial marketing that surround us". He has cropped, edited, and altered the context of these symbols in order to explore, many times with humor or irony, the odd and unusual things we remember and upon which we placed value.
