Tanner Dance Summer Week-long Professional Development Workshop
A key component of the organization’s offerings is the Summer Professional Development Workshop. This workshop allows participants to have an in-depth, intensive, and individual experience in arts integration in the classroom. The workshop teaches participants to incorporate dance, drama, visual arts, music, and literature into the elementary and secondary teaching curricula and runs concurrently with the summer session of the Tanner Dance Program at the University of Utah. Teachers attending the workshop spend their mornings (9:00 a.m. to noon) observing and participating in classes with children from preschool to fifth grade. Afternoons (1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.) are devoted to developing practical technical training of the body; understanding the craft of dance through elements of time, space, and energy; exploring visual art experiences that demonstrate dance and visual art relationships; and creating teaching tools. The interrelationships of the elements of dance, music, visual art, and literature are the focus of the afternoon experiences.
