UPCOMING EXHIBITIONS

Jim Jacobs

This exhibition represents a group of visual artists as they consider this place so many call home. Just as we shape and build the landscape around us, the landscape has a remarkable effect on us, shaping and building culture. Utah was "the place" for many indigenous peoples prior to the arrival of the Mormon pioneers. More recently, the numbers of people who call Utah "home" have expanded to include the pioneers and their several generations of descendants, as well as contemporary migrants to the Wasatch Front. This exhibition explores the diversity and value of the community through artists, community participation and historical photographs.

TOP 50  PUBLIC ARTWORKS IN NATION

Cloud, a public artwork by Christian
Moeller, commissioned by Utah Arts & Museums, has been named as one of the 50 best public art projects by the 2013 Public Art Network Year in Review by Americans for the Arts, the nation’s leading nonprofit organization for advancing the arts. Located at Dixie State College in St. George, Cloud is a large bookcase in which the spines of the books read as an abstract composition of color from close proximity and as the image of a dessert cloud from the distance. Students and faculty can borrow books of the Cloud to use them as personal note or scrapbooks and they will be restocked into the Cloud after returned to the library.

Justin Wheatley, Camille's Kenmore, 2013

Each artist in this show has dedicated themselves to doing something they hate. Not just anything they hate — something they recognize as having value, even though they dislike it. Working alongside an accomplished mentor in the media they have chosen, they work to develop skills in that particular area. Both the artists and their mentors will have work in the show. Mentors and artists include: Jeffrey R. Pugh and Namon Bills, Chris Terry and Justin Wheatley, Casey Childs and Linney Brown.  See the artists' progress on Facebook.
