Shaky Trade is a group founded upon an obsessive quest to deliver all things funky to the audience. Comprised of six instrumentalists that share an impressive musical rapport, the group was founded in 2004 in Ogden, Utah. Local musicians, huddled together in the back of a tile shop, began to concoct a patented mix of sounds, complete with funky horn riffs and the trademark snarl of Billy Bommer Jr. on lead vocals.

Now in 2011, with a revamped lineup featuring Brad Wright on guitar and Ryan Conger on keys, the band is dropping their third collection - EP(iphany). Recorded in a spooky Logan mansion in subzero temperatures, the recording is a tightly constructed set of all original funk burners. The Trade now continue to do what they do best - captivate audiences with their own homegrown blend of potent funk.

Jazz at the Station provides an all-ages venue for jazz fans and students. Well behaved children are welcome to attend as long as they do not disturb the performers or members of the audience.

The performers:
Billy Bommer Jr.
Saxophone / Vocals


Billy Bommer learned to play the saxophone under the tutelage of Ogden City public schools, along with private instruction from Mr. Richard Bush. He began playing music for an audience at age 19 with his high school friends in a band called Yogi. Followed by Shaky Trade at age 22, and now… Some favorite moments include opening up for heroes Soulive and John Scofield. Influences include Stanley Turrentine, Karl Denson, Grant Green, John Scofield, Bob Marley, Aretha Franklin, Soulive, Primus, Tower of Power, and anything New Orleans Funky.



Chris Clemons
Trumpet / Vocals


Chris Clemons started playing trumpet at the age of 10, continuing with the instrument to obtain a Bachelor’s degree in Music Performance from Weber State University at age 22. While enrolled, he joined the WSU Jazz Ensemble, under the guidance of Dr. Don Keipp. He was also a private student of jazz trumpeter Reed LeCheminant. This sparked an interest in all things jazz, and was approached to join the fledgling group Shaky Trade soon after. Since then, Chris has rehearsed, recorded and performed with many ensembles, including Ken Critchfield’s Seraphim, Jim Kuemmerle’s Triangle Jazz Project, Jebu, BBC3, The Charls Grodn Quartet, and The Junction City Big Band.



Brad Wright
Guitar


Brad Wright has been playing and composing music professionally in Northern Utah for 18 years. He studied jazz improvisation at Utah State University with Dr. Larry Smith and Corey Christiansen. Brad has played in many rock, funk, latin, and jazz bands over the years ranging from trio size all the way up to 50+ piece orchestra. A few of these bands include Euphio Project (jam band), Larry Smith’s Kix Big Band (jazz big band), Brad Wright Trio (organ trio jazz/funk), Way Way East Bay (horn funk), Jazz Pudding (jazz quartet), the USU alumni orchestra and many others. Brad currently resides in Ogden and is playing with Shaky Trade , BBC3, Brad Wright Quartet, Jazz Pudding and recently played in “Hair” (the musical) in Park City.



Ryan Conger
Piano, Keyboards, Fender Rhodes, B3 Organ, Moog and Clavinet


Ryan Conger is a jazz and funk enthusiast and a connoisseur of fine vintage keyboards. He specializes in Hammond B3, but is also well versed in Rhodes, Moog and Clavinet. He graduated in 2009 with a BM in Jazz Studies from Utah State University. In addition to playing in many local groups, he teaches at Fast Forward, a local Charter High School specializing in the arts and technology. Influences include: Jimmy McGriff, Sam Yahel, Dr. Lonnie Smith, and many more.



Greg Shaw
Bass Guitar


Greg Shaw started playing the cello in high school, developing a love for the bass guitar along the way. Blessed with a natural flair for the instrument, he played with several groups around town before meeting Billy Bommer Jr. during Billy’s stay in Yogi. Greg suggested they form a rock group with Billy on lead vocals and sax, and the two set out to recruit local musicians to join their cause. Since then, Greg has performed and recorded with a number of projects and artists, including Jebu, Mark Malan, The Trunks, Rich Wyman, and The Charls Grodn Quartet.



Michael Wong
Drums, Percussion


Michael Wong took up the drums at age 6 after being enthralled by the drummer in a university pep band. He continued through high school, playing in the jazz band. He was a member of the WSU Jazz Ensemble, under Dr. Don Keipp.. He then sharpened his chops with a number of local groups, including Jebu and Becker’s Brew. It was through these experiences he met bassist Greg Shaw, and the two hit it off musically and personally. When the Shaky Trade drum chair opened in early 2005, Wong stepped in, and the rest is history.
