Pioneer Park Picture Show: Friday nights in August
Presented by the Downtown Alliance, SLC Film Center and Salt Lake City Events
The fourth annual Pioneer Park Picture Show is Friday nights in August. The screenings are free and films begin at dusk.
Feature films are audience favorites from past Sundance Film Festivals and other international film festivals: 500 Days of Summer, Captain Abu Raed, Man on Wire, and Mid-August Lunch.
August 5: 500 Days of Summer
2009, 95 min
When his girlfriend, Summer (Zooey Deschanel), unceremoniously dumps him, greeting-card copywriter and hopeless romantic Tom (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) begins sifting through the year-plus worth of days they spent together, looking for clues to what went awry.

Airport janitor Abu Raed has long wanted to travel the world, but he's had to settle for imagined experiences through books and conversations. When a group of children mistakes him for a pilot, he captivates them with made-up tales of adventure.

Philippe Petit captured the world's attention in 1974 when he successfully walked across a high wire between New York's Twin Towers. This Oscar-winner for Best Documentary explores the preparations that went into the stunt as well as the event and its aftermath.

August 26: Mid August Lunch

As the Italian holiday of “Pranzo di Ferragosto” approaches, cash-strapped Gianni gets help from his landlord, his friend and his doctor, who all offer financial relief in exchange for Gianni looking after their elderly relatives over the holiday. Four mismatched Italian mamas at the same table make for an awkward, hilarious and touching mid-August lunch.
