Press Release
Kronos Quartet to Perform 9/11 Memorial Piece Awakening at Kingsbury Hall
August 19, 2011: Kronos Quartet, one of the world’s most acclaimed classical performance groups, is returning to Salt Lake City to perform Awakening, a musical meditation on the anniversary of 9/11. The work, which will feature a special guest performance by the International Children’s Choir, will be performed at Kingsbury Hall on Tuesday, September 13, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $19.50 - $39.50 and are available by calling 801-581-7100 or visiting www.kingtix.com.
By turns passionate and reflective, Awakening focuses on the theme that we are all one world community and comprises 12 compositions—including works by Michael Gordon, Terry Riley, Osvaldo Golijov and Gustavo Santaolalla, and John Oswald—plus gripping arrangements of traditional songs from around the globe. This stirring collection of works reflects upon those instances where traditional language fails us, and music steps in to restore what violinist David Harrington refers to as “equilibrium in the midst of imbalance.” Awakening was commissioned in 2006 by San Francisco Presents and received it’s world-premiere on the fifth anniversary of the attacks at the Herbst Theater in San Francisco, CA.
In conjunction with the performance, Kingsbury Hall, in partnership with ASUU, the College of Law and the Hinckley Institute of Politics, is hosting a discussion, led by a panel of social and political experts, about the changes in our communities, our nation and our world following the attacks of September 11, 2001. This collective community conversation will take place on Sunday, September 11, at 3:00 PM at Kingsbury Hall. We hope that the conversations resulting from Awakening will serve as a temporary balm for our feelings that day and the many other events of chaos and confusion that characterize modern existence. Visit www.kingtix.com for additional details.
For more than 30 years, the Kronos Quartet—David Harrington, John Sherba (violins), Hank Dutt (viola) and Jeffrey Zeigler (cello)—has pursued a singular artistic vision, combining a spirit of fearless exploration with a commitment to expanding the range and context of the string quartet. In the process, Kronos has become one of the most celebrated and influential groups of our time, performing thousands of concerts worldwide, releasing more than 40 recordings of extraordinary breadth and creativity, collaborating with many of the world's most eclectic composers and performers, and commissioning hundreds of works and arrangements for string quartet. Kronos' work has also garnered numerous awards, including a Grammy for Best Chamber Music Performance (2004) and "Musicians of the Year" (2003) from Musical America.
