Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company Reaches Out To New Group For Education Week
As part of our mission to train artists as educators, Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company has selected a group of Somali refugee children, along with other children from the community, to participate in the dancer training week August 15-19, 2011 at the Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center. The Company will teach creative movement and introduce the children to the world of dance, while also training new Ririe-Woodbury Dancers and honing the skills of our seasoned dancers in the pedagogy and philosophy of educating for K-12 students.
Ririe-Woodbury discovered this opportunity through its community partnerships involved with refugee relocation. Many of the children and their families are new residents of Salt Lake City, working hard to assimilate into western culture. The majority of the children are from Somalia’s Bantu tribe, which historically has had to overcome great challenges assimilating – never learning to read or write in their own language, and never being exposed to electricity or plumbing.
“This educational experience will be extremely positive for the kids involved and for our dancers,” says Ririe-Woodbury Education Director Georganne “Gigi” Arrington. “The interaction that the participants will receive in a fun, yet educational environment will be helpful in the assimilation process.”
