SUU’s JAZZ BAND
PUTS ON ITS “BIG SWING FACE”
NOVEMBER 15, 2011

Southern Utah University, Cedar City, Utah: This November, SUU’s Jazz Band is giving you the chance to put on your Big Swing Face with its free concert. Directed by Dr. Thomas Herb, the evening’s program of sizzling selections will have you swaying in your seat, tapping your feet and putting a big smile across your face. The concert will take place Tuesday, November 15 in the Sharwan Smith Center’s Living Room. The concert will kick off at 7:30pm and admission is free and the public is encouraged to attend.

The evening will include with the night’s title song Big Swing Face in an orchestration that was originally performed by the Buddy Rich Big Band. Other selections come from America’s great jazz catalogue. Molasses which uses the Woody Herman Thundering Herd arrangement, Afternoon by Pat Metheny, High Maintenance with an orchestration by Gordon Goodwin and the Big Phat Band, It’s Raggy Waltz by Dave Brubeck, Hullabaloo by Alan Blaylock, Cubano Chant by Ray Bryant, Smack Dam in the Middle using the arrangements of the Count Basie Big Band, and Follow the Leader by Fred Sturm.

Dr. Thomas Herb is an instrumental music education specialist with 15 years of experience. He has taught and conducted instrumental ensembles, as well as overseen full instrumental programs in high school and collegiate settings. Additionally, Dr. Herb has led music teacher preparation programs for over 5 years. As a saxophonist, Dr. Herb is in demand in both classical and jazz settings. As a well-rounded saxophonist, Dr. Herb can perform equally well in classical and jazz idioms. He has performed regularly with the Mississippi Valley Saxophone Quartet, the Illinois Missouri Swing Machine, and the Keokuk Big River Jazz Band. His additional notable performances include solos and section work with the Quincy Symphony. Other performances include the Quincy Sunday Music Series, the California Wind Orchestra, and the Consumnes River Jazz Band.

ABOUT THE COLLEGE
The Southern Utah University College of Performing and Visual Arts is comprised of nationally accredited departments of Art and Design, Music, Theatre Arts and Dance, as well as a graduate program in Arts Administration. The College offers 16 different degree areas, including liberal arts Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees; professional Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Fine Arts in art and theatre degrees; and a Master of Fine Arts in Arts Administration degree.
