FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE.
SALT LAKE ACTING COMPANY IS THRILLED TO ANNOUNCE THAT ‘THE PERSIAN QUARTER’ BY PLAYWRIGHT IN RESIDENCE KATHLEEN CAHILL HAS BEEN NOMINATED FOR THE ATCA/STEINBERG NEW PLAY AWARD.
Salt Lake Acting Company is proud to announce that THE PERSIAN QUARTER by Playwright in Residence Kathleen Cahill has been recommended for consideration for the American Theatre Critics Association’s annual ATCA/Steinberg New Play Award. The prestigious award honors new scripts produced outside of New York City in 2011.  THE PERSIAN QUARTER received its world premiere last February as part of the 2010-2011 Season at SLAC.
The American Theatre Critics Association has chosen new plays to be cited in their theatre yearbook’s ‘Best Plays’ since 1974.  As of 1986, ATCA has chosen three such plays each year for its New Play Awards. This January, the top-ranked playwright will be awarded $15,000 and both runners-up will be awarded $5,000. The awards will be announced at the Humana Festival in Louisville, Kentucky.
It is quite an honor to be considered by ATCA, as only about two dozen scripts are recommended out of hundreds of new plays seen by ATCA agents. Kathleen Cahill says of her nomination, “Even to be considered for a national award feels like an honor to me, and an honor to the production team at SLAC. There are so many plays produced every year around the country.... just to be noticed is amazing.”
Congratulations to everyone involved in SLAC’s world premiere production of THE PERSIAN QUARTER.  Playwright Kathleen Cahill and the company & creative team including cast members Nell Gwynn, Deena Marie Manzanares, Shane Mozaffari & Josh Thoemke; costume designer Brenda Van der Wiel; lighting designer Jesse Portillo; sound designer Cynthia Kehr Rees; choreographer Cynthia Fleming; set designer Keven Myhre; and director Alexandra Harbold.

This honor acknowledges the importance of Kathleen Cahill’s work. We are fortunate to have such a brilliant and enlightened writer in our Salt Lake City community and proud that Salt Lake Acting Company has already championed and produced 2 of her world premieres. CHARM was produced in March 2010 and won the Edgerton Best New American Play award. In February 2011 THE PERSIAN QUARTER received its world premiere and also won the Edgerton Best New American Play Award. Serving SLAC’s mission to make a significant contribution to the American theatre field, THE PERSIAN QUARTER has had continued life after SLAC’s stage. THE PERSIAN QUARTER recently opened the season at Merrimack Rep in Massachusetts in September 2011 and received a staged reading at Chicago’s Timeline Theatre Company in May 2011. SLAC will proudly present the world premiere of Kathleen Cahill’s newest play COURSE 86B IN THE CATALOGUE in April 2012.
