Browning Center for the Performing Arts. Tickets are $10/$7, available at the door or in advance through the Dee Events Center Tickets, 1-800-WSU-TIKS or weberstatetickets.com.
PLACE: Dancing The Green Map was inspired by Green Map icons©, beautifully designed symbols representing our life, our history, and our economy that help people identify and become more aware of the importance of sustainability…. Living, eating, working and playing in ways that will not jeopardize the health of the planet or the quality of life for all cultures, species or generations to come
An icon has many layers of symbolic meaning imbedded into the design that goes beyond the object represented. The choreography also has many layers of information that invite us to view and interpret the world in unique ways. That is the nature of art. These poetic “movement essays” are meant to raise consciousness and concern about the health of our communities and the earth. The icons help us see our communities from a fresh perspective in order to celebrate environmental progress, inspire environmental stewardship and develop a greater understanding of “place.”
RDT and WSU’s Green Map® Project
RDT and WSU Moving Company is seeking ways to make the arts more relevant in communities through inter-disciplinary programs and events that use dance as a tool to educate, to heal and to promote creative solutions to problems. The Green Map Project invites people to tell the story of their communities by gathering information about their neighborhoods and by creating a map on which icons are used to identify Sustainable Living, Nature, Culture & Society.
RDT, WSU Moving Company and WSU Geography Department are collaborating on this community-building project to develop curriculum and activities for students in the Ogden School District who will help create a Green Map, a portrait of their communities using visual arts, photographs, videos, essays, and dance. The Ogden Green Map® Project is under the direction of Joanne L. Lawrence, Dance Area Head, and Dr. Julie Rich, Geography Professor. Through Community Based Learning, WSU dancers and geography students are partnering with RDT and the Ogden School District (including the Gear Up Program, coordinated by Carrie Maxson).
