SUU’S DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC PRESENTS
THE SPRING SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA & CHORAL CONCERT
APRIL 16, 2013

Southern Utah University, Cedar City, Utah: Enjoy the combined Southern Utah University Choirs and Symphony Orchestra with guest soloists as they unite to present Franz Joseph Haydn’s classical work, Mass in B, Theresienmesse. SUU’s Utah University’s Department of Music’s Masterworks Series presents this Spring Symphony Orchestra and Choral Concert on Tuesday, April 16, 2013 at 7:30pm.

The performance will take place in the Heritage Center Theater, 105 N 100 E, downtown Cedar City. Pricing for the Music Masterworks series is: General Adult Admission: $8, SUU Faculty & Staff: $6, and Student/Child: $4. SUU students are admitted free by presenting a valid ID at the door. To purchase tickets, call (435) 586-7872, Monday-Friday, 8:00am-4:30pm or visit www.suu.edu/pva. Tickets may also be purchased at the door.

Under the direction of Dr. Kevin L. Baker and Sara Gutenberg, the combined choirs of Southern Utah University will present Haydn’s classic work together with the Southern Utah University Orchestra, which is under the direction of Xun Sun. The joint performance will be conducted by Dr. Kevin L. Baker.

The performance will feature soloists Carol Ann Modesitt (soprano and professor of music at SUU), Sarah Maxwell (mezzo-soprano and 2010 graduate of SUU), Dr. Lawrence Johnson (tenor and associate professor of music at SUU), and Dr. Darrell Babidge (baritone and assistant professor of music at BYU).

Under the direction of Sun Xun, the SUU Symphony Orchestra will perform with student conductors Kortne Pedersen and Trevor Walker. This is an incredible opportunity for student conductors, and these students will take full advantage of the opportunity to learn, grow, and contribute to this incredible concert. Kortne Pedersen will conduct March of Scaffold from Symphonie Fantastique by Hector Berlioz (1803-1869) arranged by Richard Meyer. Trevor Walker will conduct Into the Storm by Robert W. Smith (born 1958). Zheng Guo, a visiting scholar, joins the SUU Symphony Orchestra from the Music College of The Hunan Normal University, Changsha City, Hunan of China. Guo will conduct a highlight from The Lord of the Rings by Howard Shore (born 1946).

The composer, Franz Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) is often a favorite of concert-goers due to his ability to create fine works of musical art that retain an earthy accessibility infused with the spirit of the Austrian folk music of his childhood. This combination led Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart to say that “Haydn alone has the secret both of making me smile and of touching my innermost soul.” The combined talents of the four guest soloists, the choirs, and the orchestra of Southern University will surely provide concert attendees with the same experience that Mozart enjoyed by recreating Haydn’s “Maria Theresa Mass.”

Enjoy Haydn’s classical expressions of fear, introspection, prayer, and joy through this fantastic choral and orchestral medium as part of SUU’s Music Masterworks series.
