CUAC is pleased to present new work by Utah native and conceptual painter Steven Stradley in his solo exhibition Peripheries. Stradley’s nontraditional paintings will take the form of investigative installations that highlight the often discarded and forgotten architectural elements specific to CUAC’s gallery space while simultaneously exploring the self-referential properties of painting.
Fully aware of the history of Modernism Stradley explores color, texture, and abstraction in expansive panels. He then positions his work within particular spaces to activate a dialogue between the viewer, the work and the location. Stradley chooses to “hang” his paintings in a manner that allows segments to be viewed on all sides transforming his works into free-hanging sculptures, thereby redefining two-dimensional painting. By directing viewers’ eyes toward ceilings, floors, niches and walls Stradley invites viewers to acknowledge the unique structural attributes of each space he exhibits in, facilitating an examination of place and the function of painting as a medium and as a frame.
Steven Stradley received a Bachelors of Fine Arts in Painting and Art Education from Utah State University. He also received a Masters of Fine Arts in Painting from Michigan State University. He currently resides in St. George, Utah and teaches at Tuacahn High School for Performing Arts.
CUAC strives to develop and expand Utah’s regional art-culture through exhibitions of contemporary art and by creating a context for understanding. Admission to CUAC is always free.
