Flabbergast @ Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company (SLC: Jan 31)

Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company continues its 50th Anniversary Season with Flabbergast, a show for all ages at the newly-remodeled Janet Quinney Lawson Capitol Theatre. Featuring works by choreographer and circus maestro, Tandy Beal. Flabbergast is a
magical and mystery-filled tour through time and space. The Show runs January 31 and February 1 at 7pm and February 1 at 2pm. Tickets for a Family of 5 are just $45.

This brand new production immerses the audience in a journey of wonder as the acrobatic physicality of the dancers defies expectation. Breathtaking stunts, vibrant costumes, and a compelling score by longtime Ririe-Woodbury collaborator, Jon Scoville, accompany Tandy’s brilliant choreography. The Company is also joined by an array of guest performers that span a multitude of generations. This variety of tantalizing facets create something inspirational for everyone to enjoy.

Tandy Beal's whimsical dance composition and storyline draws from her work internationally as a circus director and choreographer. The New York Times has called Tandy, "A choreographer of taste and intelligence - a sure sense of theatre."
In conjunction with the public performances, Ririe-Woodbury presents five student matinees which are open and free to students at all Utah Schools. More than 6,000 students and teachers will see this performance at no charge thanks to funding from the Utah State Office of Education POPS Program, Utah Arts Council, Salt Lake Arts Council, and our Corporate, Foundation, and individual donors who also play a large role in allowing the continuation of these matinees. More information for educators is available at www.ririewoodbury.com

Tandy Beal is a performer, director, choreographer, writer, teacher, producer and ... dreamer. As the Artistic Director for Tandy Beal & Company (‘71-present) and for the Pickle Family Circus (‘91-2000), she has created 25 full-length shows and approximately 100 shorter works that have toured 48 states (Spoleto Festival & Kennedy Center) and on 4 continents (Fete a Aix, Togamura Festival), including a US State Department tour of Eastern Europe and two tours of Japan funded by the Japan US Friendship Commission. She also wrote, directed and choreographed Viva! for the Moscow Circus which ran for 2 years in Japan.

Her recent projects include world tours with Bobby McFerrin, performing and staging his new wordless opera and other works, US tours with Mixed Nutz, Song Circus, and Mangia del Arte all with circus, song and world dance, as well as HereAfterHere: a self-guided tour of eternity.

Her film and television credits include choreography for all the major characters in Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas, an Emmy-Award winning PBS special, Voice/DanceThe Garden, a music video with Bobby McFerrin, as well as appearances on The Today Show, A&E, and the Arsenio Hall Show. The American Film Institute chose her to create Buried Light, a film she wrote and directed on Hildegard von Bingen.

The award-winning company was founded in 1964, and is dedicated to furthering dance through performances and education under the direction of Artistic Director, Daniel Charon. Ririe-Woodbury’s mission is accomplished through educational outreach programs, creation of new works, and touring.
